I am afraid these are more "view" photos than "accom" phots, but as the view is the main drawcard imho, i thought they were better than nothing
These are the 4 person sleepers huts facing the amphitheatre. The only drawbacks were low water pressure in the shower (mid-winter) and a longish walk from car to hut. Pretty minor really.

I will be visiting Golden Gate Highlands NP with my family early in September next year. It will be our last stop in South Africa. Is it worth paying the high rates to spend our last night in a log cabin at Highlands Mountain Retreat? I know it is quite high elevation there..... will it likely be too cold/dry to be worthwhile? I am torn between the wonderful setting and worrying that it may be a bit too dreary, and that we would be happier down in the valley (while paying less). Yet I don't want to pass it up if it really is a special place that time of year. Any advice would be appreciated!

Mountain Retreat is very special. But, if you are there for one night, it could be misty (it was for us when we stayed there in an October) and you will miss the amazing views. If it is clear, then it is really worth it.
I like the suggestion of the Basotho Village We loved our stay there.
if I remember correct, most of the road is gravel. At the steepest parts there are two lanes wich are tared or similar (hope you understand what I mean ). I was there in September 2013 and at this time I would say it was possible with a normal motor bike.
Have a wonderful christmas time and all the best for 2016.

Paved/tarred combination all the way to the top. There is a very steep gradient just before reaching the Retreat but should be totally doable. I still remember meeting a guy RUNNING up to the retreat one time. Crazy...
Thank you all for your help Getting up there on a motorcycle would have been no problem, however on Christmas Day when we due to go up to Mountain Retreat to meet and have a braai with Kaapsedraai it was raining.
Kaapsedraai very kindly drove back down to Glenn Reenen to fetch morecat and I , ( I would not have enjoyed going up there on a bike in the rain at all ) we had a super braai and a chat in the rain
Isn't it just amazing how potatoes give us fries and vodka? The rest of the vegetables should get their act together
