Micetta, I think the Half Human or Halfmens is a tree growing in desert region of South Africa and Namibia. It doesn’t have branches, has a spiny trunk and leaves on top. It can grow to approximately 2 meters in height.

In spring, light green flowers appear in the centre of the leaves. :hmz:

There is a great legend about this tree as well. According to Khoekhoe legend their ancestors were turned into trees by a sympathetic god to relieve their suffering when they were driven southwards by warring tribes from the north. Some ancestors turned back to look longing across the Orange River and are now eternally gazing northwards.

The name “Khoekhoe” means “men of men”. Their herds of sheep and cattle gave them a stable, balanced diet and they lived in larger groups than the San. They also had a more complex and hierarchical society than the San.

The 'halfmens' can be found around the Sendelingsdrift area.

Halfmens (mens is person in Afrikaans)

There is a nice one growing on the left slope as you approach the Orange river on the way to Potjiespram from Sendelingsdrift, in Richtersveld NP.

Did you see it A-E?

Great pics A-E. I saw the spot where I put my foot into the water to test its depth and disappeared headlong under it to the great laughter of all those watching.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

This is a very interesting thread, Halfmens is a plant we've wanted to see for a long time. We've been talking of flying into Cape Town, driving up to Windhoek and handing in the rental car there. So we get to see Halfmens on the way, and then Welwitschia
in Namibia. Would that be do-able in 2 weeks? I guess we would also need a 4X4 for getting to that halfsmen in the Richtersveld?

The halfmens is the common name of Pachypodium namaquanum, they are only present in one of our national parks the Richtersveld.
Ask not what your plant can do for you but what you can do for your planet.

There are some specimens between Tzaneen & Phalaborwa, & also in Phalaborwa, but not naturally found in the area as far as I know.

Many of those found in gardens are actually of the Madagascar variety, and not those found in the Richtersveld.

Nope not as far as I know Micetta, they grow on the rocky slopes of the mountains in Richtersveld. No Rocky slopes in KTP. (Not like I would know never visited it before! )
