Kamea - Our favourite Wild Dog

Unread post by SamoesaWoestyn » Mon Nov 09, 2009 9:13 pm

Kamea

After many sightings were posted of a very popular female Wild Dog in KNP, the SANPARK forum members decided to give her a name.
Everyone had a chance to vote for a name and at the end the most votes went to Kamea. It is of Hawaiian origin, and its meaning is "the one (and only)".

How to identify her
She has got a unique "K" mark on her left front leg and from the right side she can be identified by the white stripe on her neck.

Where in Kruger
She roams in the area of Mathekenyane (Granokop) area near Skukuza. Some recorded sightings of her go as far as Kruger Gate, the S1, S112 and the surroundings of Granokop.

Interesting facts about her
In 2007 she was spotted in a pack on the S1
In July 2009 she was seen at Granokop with 3 pups. (Not in a pack anymore)
October 2009 she and her 3 "pups" were spotted in the same area and the youngsters were much bigger then.

Let’s use this thread to keep track of our beautiful dog and make it a new challenge to find her when you visit the Kruger again.

Please post all sightings of her as well as photos.

Let’s make her famous and enjoy her presence!

She is beautiful! She is less "spot painted" than most wild dogs; her back is almost plain coloured. I would like to meet her 8)

We saw Kamea in Oct. 2009 near Granokop with her 3 'pups', and they were all in beautiful condition.

There are more pics of Kamea on my TR and on the Wild Dog thread.

We'll be back in Kruger in March 2010 and I can't wait to go and look for her again!

Wonderful thread - I have not seen the doggies in Kruger in visiting the Park for more than 8 years, but will look out for "Special K" in coming trips.

Great idea and chellenge for all forumites to find her and post some pics, we should do this on more species like the "King of the Jungle" as Lourens called him...

Hi all,

After a long while I checked the public gallery pictures and found this pic (taken by Paul Nixon on 29.09.2009 near Transport Dam)

I am not 100% sure if it is she but I think so…

Hi SW - I'd say it's definitely her. There's that funny white squiggle at the top of her right front leg. Well spotted.

I started updating our maps for our July visit and found another two sightings of Kamea…

This one is posted in the public gallery by Danielle Scheepers near Skukuza on 5 January 2010

And then found this one on the forum, posted by Maiper (posted March 2010)

Hi

I believe Muhammad must have seen her and the 2 young ones on the same day as us - 5 December 2009. When we got there the 2 young ones was laying in the road and she was standing next to the road. There came a lot of OSV and they ( the wild dogs) set of back in Skukuza's direction. At a stage right into a herd of Impala. I will try and post pictures later today!

That was our second WD sighting in the park. Now that I know she has a name I'm very excited
