Hi geraas,

It is explained on these forums somewhere, that the trails are not intended to be challenging for 4x4 drivers. The insistence that only 4x4s may drive them is to protect the ecology and make as little impact on the bush as possible.

For me the cost is well worth the opportunity to drive into the bush away from the other roads, and on the occasion we did this trail, be the only people on it for the entire day 8)

SANParks policy on the adventure trails is 4x4 only and you must do the entire trail in at least 4H (or true 4x4 in softroaders). This is to protect the roads from wheel spins.

Have done all the trails except the Northern one.
Geraas, at first I also thought that any vehicle would be capable, but after I've done Madlabantu in June this year I'll think twice. Time of year definitely a factor. All the roads seem to be easy till you reach some point where 4x4 is not necessary but it will help you OUT of trouble if you strike it. I think with the opening of these trails Sanparks's attitude is correct. They can't spend time towing Tazz's out of riverbeds! Price wise I also thought it to be a bit on the high side R200-300 bucks more acceptable.

The Nononkani trail has to be booked at Phalaborwa gate on the day you wish to do it.

The launch of the two Adventure Trails will also see the existing Nonokani 4 x 4 Adventure Trail which runs through the wilderness areas of Phalaborwa section up to the Olifants River being permanently closed. “We experienced a number of visitor related problems in the past that affected the experience of tourists who took part in the Nonokani 4 x 4 Adventure Trail and that is the reason we are closing it now;” said Mr Ben van Eeden, the Regional Manager of Nxanatseni Region.

Furthermore the trail will be closed as of from the afternoon, 31 Oct 2009.

What a shame, what a loss  . To think that the actions of a few flippen hooligans have ruined this  :sniper: . What about the other trails? Are they also going to be closed?

Unfortunately the damage has been done, but what the authorities should have done, and that is just a suggestion, is to allow only 4X4 owners on the trail, who are members of an accredited 4X4 club and who are in possession of a letter recommendation from the club.

Unfortunately it won't help with the chancers who just illegally go down the route thinking their standard cars will be good enough!
But I agree, what a great pity it is spoilt for the genuine 4 x 4 visitors.

Here you could enjoy this most beautiful view , the Xanatseni South regional manager informed me that the reason for closing it was that there was at times a visual impact of 4x4 trailists for the Olifants back pack trailists walking on the opposite river bank .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.
