Owlet, Pearl-spotted

Unread post by wildtuinman » Mon May 30, 2005 7:33 am

First time that I have seen one during the night. It was spotted on a nightdrive from Lower Sabie. I have previously seen a couple during daytime, morningish between 7 and 10am. It is also then when the whistle call of the owlet is prominent. Tsweet Tsweet Tsweet.... Tsweeoooo, Tsweeoooo, Tsweeoooo!

Since I learnt about the PSO on Sweni hike (Satara area) in May this year, I have seen it quite a number of times in that central area (Satara/Pretorius/Skukuz)... so beautiful. OFten sitting alone in a dried up tree.

(the owl that is, although sometimes I wish I was)

The kids took these pics of a Pearl Spotted Owlet in Nossob Camp in July 2006 ... it lives in a tree near reception. They sat down for more than half an hour to take the pics ... patiently waiting for it to show itself and the "eyes" on the back of its head.

Saw them hunting in the mid-afternoon in quite high densities [about 1 every 1/2 acre] near Marakele National Park couple of years back (just a few km's from Thabazimbi).
Latest Lifers: Brown-Backed Honeybird; Violet-Eared Waxbill; Green-Winged Pytilia; and heard often but never seen - Yellow-Fronted Tinkerbird (±2m away in the open)

Saw this one every day at Pretoriuskop in one of three trees between the restaurant and shop. When SO and I had the tri-pod out to take photos everybody came to see what we were looking at. The owl didnt smaak the attention at all.

By exclusion I decided that this handsome owl should be a 'Pearl Spotted Owl', but I am not sure.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye
