Dorothy Bickley: A Tribute

Unread post by Imberbe » Sun Jul 19, 2009 1:36 am

On Saturday 18 July 2009 a group of SANParks Honorary Rangers and staff gathered to pay tribute to a very special person and dedicated member of the Honorary Ranger movement.

For some 25 years Dorothy Bickley served the Honorary Ranger movement and SANParks with utmost loyalty and dedication.

Dorothy will be remembered for her contribution on many different levels. For many years she was the secretary of the Pretoria Region, and part of the training team. She also served in a volunteer capacity as the Honorary Rangers National Secretary at SANParks headquarters. She was involved in many a stock take and all kinds of different administrative tasks at SANParks headquarters and a number of parks. She also indexed the Custos and Go Wild magazines.

Dorothy will always be known for two special projects that lay close to her heart:

The annual Morula kids art competition was a special passion. She was involved in the planning, sending out of forms and management of entries. Even on her death bed she remained concerned about the future of this competition.

Dorothy was also the author of two books, chronicling the history of the Honorary Ranger movement. She knew more than most about the rich history of this movement, and left a valuable resource capturing this information for the future.

Dorothy remained an active member till the very end, always attending regional meetings and regularly visiting Groenkloof in search of work.

As a tribute to the invaluable contribution Dorothy made to SANParks and the Honorary Rangers, Dorothy was awarded a Merit Award (Gold) by the movement.

************

I will always remember Dorothy for two words of advice she always gave new HRs:

1. Always take a large nail with you to the parks. You never know when one of the braais is without one.

2. Make sure that you know what burning Tamboti wood smells like. You will save some visitors big anguish, by preventing them from being affected by the chemicals in this wood, which cause severe stomach problems.

This was indicative of the type of person she was. Always dedicated to help others.

Yes, she was indeed a remarkable person.

We had the privilege of being in the same region. My husband and I always have a laugh when we pass a tamboti, thinking of her saying to us "... make sure you know what it smells like - just in case someone is using it to braai with!! "

Thanks to all those who attended yesterday's function at Groenkloof honoring Dorothy.
