4x4 for KTP

Unread post by tsetse vlieg » Sun Aug 10, 2008 1:25 pm

Hi Lornioiz
In April i was at MM and we met two German tourists with a 1968 VW beetle (6 volt). Every time we were going out to do some game viewing (with our 4x4's) they were just a couple of min. behind us. They travelled on all the roads except 4x4 trails. After a couple of days the VW left for Nam. Judging by the standard of that VW i think a 4x2 will do just fine.
Just do your trip and enjoy it

a link to care hire facilities at Upington Airport
As you can see all general rental companies have a branch at the airport
But they are not always open. Nor do they have a big selection.
If you want a specific car its best to book in advance
Then the car will be ready.
btw, its a very efficient airport and ditto rental services

Hi Basil,

I live in Upington and here are quite a few guys renting out 4x4 vehicles. If you pm me, I can send you some contacting details. or is it not 4x4 that you want? I presume you have heard the saying that the best 4x4 is an Avis Corolla anyway....
Greetings

I am travelling to KTP in 2 weeks. I tried several car hire companies, and was actually confirmed with a 4x4, and then told the confirmation was issued in error. I kept trying and was unable to find a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle anywhere. (I was trying from the USA). I then used a company called southafrica and they were able to find a 4x4 for me. I have been very impressed with them thus far.

Right, after reading all this I have completely lost my way about all these different cars. So, what Jannie says seems to make the most sense: just make sure you are a good driver.
We have driven 4x4's before during our ecotraining Gameranger training. Would that be enough (4 weeks in and out of sandy rivers without water)?? We drove those 9 persons big open Toyota's............
And: it is said one can rent 4x4's at Twee Rivieren, is that true??

Kr, Irene

Renting at Twee Rivieren is not true
And you dont need a 4X4 for KTP
Just drive slowly and look out for bad patches in the road and you will be fine.
I did it in May and not a dent
A flat tyre yes, but that can happen to the best of us

No lions to help you with that ? How did you solve it?

We had a flat once when watching a couple of hyaenas (or however you spell that) eating a buffalo. Luckily on the other side, so the rangers and most people got out and changed the wheel. Some of us stayed in the car to keep the view right and see what the animals were doing. Very exciting period................... and only a couple of minutes out of the camp!

Kgaladi in only 4x4's?

Unread post by KJWard » Wed Dec 24, 2008 11:15 am

Hi everyone, I have been told that one can only go to Kgalagadi in a 4x4 vehicle? I was there in September and that was not the case. Can someone advise please?

Quite true KJW,

The access road has now been tarred, and the internal roads are gravel, and in good condition. I saw golfs and the like there last week.
There are some routes however, that are ONLY for 4WD, but the 2 main river roads and 2 dune roads between the main camps are all accessible by sedan vehicles. You might get a bit 'all shook up', and you should not be a 'clean freak'.
Whatever (according to BB): "You are correct but I don't want to admit it".

Thanks Bush Baptist! I was concerned that a new rule had been introduced which would really limit this piece of heaven to only the fortunate few!

It is only the fortunate few that go to Kgal KJW, the rest go to Kruger

Union's End in a Sedan?

Unread post by jesniel » Sun Dec 28, 2008 11:37 am

I would like to visit Union's End in April.

Is it possible to reach Union's End in a Sedan?
Will the Nossob river be dry?

Jesper
who also wants to reach the tricountry marker
