Bottom 5 Disliked Kruger Roads

Unread postby G@mespotter » Wed May 14, 2008 5:08 pm

Hi all,

Bottom 5 Disliked Kruger Roads is an idea which resulted from the Top 5 Famous kruger roads topic, but just the other way around.

Maybe a bit controversial, but it might get interesting....

Mine are:
1. H1-1 just before Skukuza
2. Timfenheni Loop (s121)
3. s37
4. s142
5.s131
Tambotie 20 July, Shipandane Birdhide 21 July, Mphongolo Backpack Trail 22 -25 July, Tzendze 26 July, and Greater Limpopo National Park 27 -29 July :D

But if you insist:
Old tshokwane road
S36 up to the S34
S90
Sorry I can't think of the 5th one

Hey GS.

This is going to be interesting. I wondered how soon the S100 would come up and how many other roads will be in both favourite and least favoutite threads.

I'll think on this one some more, but have to agree on the S36. It was bady corrugated when we travelled it in April 2008.
The Marula loop was a washout for me as well and the Mahonie Loop.

May I suggest the S90, the bit between Gudzani and Ngotso weir road? The landscape is great, but sightings? Which?

Definitely with you on that one DQ.

Have done that one a few times and also never seen anything interesting.

Weird though as all the maps and Kruger books recommend s90

I myself haven't seen anything on that road either

Hey guys and gals!

This is a great thread and one that just confirms the golden @ @ rule :D !

The S90 has always been good for us and have seen lion there on many occassions... as well as Marula loop  !

Bottom 5 roads for us:

S131... Has anyone seen anything on this road other than pyramid koptjies?

S36 below Lugmag towards Skukuza

S127 near Timbavati

H1-5 between Olifants and Letaba... in thick mopani plains

S142 near Mopani... only Buff's on this road!

Tough one though!
A bird in the hand should be in the Bush!! ;)

We once saw a pride of lions around a young wildebeet kill about 100m onto the S90 from H1-4.

Spent much time there watching, taking vidoes and watching the lazy beasts lion around. That was the only special sighting.
Other than that, game viewing has been very dull on the S90. I haven't even seen any decent bird sightings on that road.

DD, I think you and I have the same book that shows the 90 a being productive (one of those newer Kruger maps and spotting the big 5?)

One man's meat is another man's poison. I for one enjoy the S90. On my last trip in Jan 08 the S90 produced many memorable sightings. Refer to my trip report. But hey, I do not mind if you leave the S90 alone for me to travel all by myself!!!!!

MASHABA,

I had a great sighting on the S82 Mativuhlugu loop last time I was in Kruger. We saw a beautiful leopard in a tree about 3-4 km from the south end of the road. It had an impala that it had killed the previous night hanging in the tree next to it.

We watched the leopard for about 1/2 hour (it would've been longer but not for gate closing time) just saddling the tree branch. Underneath the tree, a hyena trotted around for some leftover scraps.

Agreed on, but you can swing wide and take the H9 - H14 route which is quite good.
cheetah2111 wrote:2. Mopani - Shingwezi tar road!

The S50 is a fabulous road, especially if you are a birder.
cheetah2111 wrote:3. Letaba - Palaborwa tar road!

Oops, I just pointed that one out. But cheetah are seen very often on that road.
cheetah2111 wrote:4. S131 (dirt road going West of Letaba)

Yup, nothing there! Well, I have never been lucky there at least.
cheetah2111 wrote:5. S140 (Dirt road going from the H7 to Talamati)

You mean the S145? Down from Orpen? THE road to take if you want to see Sable.

My worst roads, aside from the S131, are the S90 and the S100. I know some people see fantastic things there, I see gravel, grass and some impalas and zebras.
The H5 (next to the old Selati rail route) has never been friendly to me, and aside from a python swimming next to the car the S47 (west of Letaba) has not shown me anything.

worst roads in the kruger although better than any other roads in SA are;

1. H1-1
2. H4-1
3. H10
4. S100 (Too many cars, too many idiots, not the true kruger experience, cars driving off road all the time) Puke in my mouth kind of stuff.
5. Letaba to Phalaborwa road.

Most underrated roads in the park

1. S140 - S145 (local wild dog packs, non-shy servals, black rhino, sable galore)
2. S90 Balule to Bangu (Beautiful area)
3. S143 - S50 (Best non Satara lion area)
4. S60 - (Punda Maria area)
5. S52 (Red Rocks)

Best Roads

All roads that lead to the Kruger Park.
