Msasa (Brachystegia spiciformis)? I know these trees are found around Chimanimani and Mutare and a population was discovered near the Soutpansberg...

Thank you FG! I really love trees and do not get too many around here! :D

Driving along the Gomondwane Loop there are an abundance of these shrub-like trees. At first glance one may mistake them for sicklebush... however on closer inspection they reveal themselves to be ______ _________ ________.

Nope... but a good guess! They are there just not the ones I am thinking. Not in acacia family.

Right... let's go over the evidence... Gomondwane Loop. Shrubby like trees that I mistook for Sickle Bush and only after many years of assumption decided to take a closer look and was totally surprised by the outcome.

These deciduous trees may actually reach a height of 21m however they are often found as shrubs or small trees. The leaf is very acacia-like although the pinnae are larger. They often have a cone shaped growth form with prolific growth of stems from the base. New leaves are a beautiful coppery-red.

I think it was their "bare of leaves" nature when visiting in winter that gave me the impression they were Sickle Bush. Once I saw them in January it was a different story!

The family is well represented in South Africa!
