So glad he is at home.

Will keep him and the family in our thoughts and prayers for the rest of the operations and recovery process.

The latest update from Andrew on the facebook page, post 20 mins ago:

Andrew Desmet posted to Andrew Desmet Support Group

Hello everyone... We just got back to Letaba... Had a good trip to Nelspruit... Thank goodness for the KNP arranging me to be flown down by helicopter because my hip was really talking to me after just an hour which is the time it took to reach Nelspruit as opposed to the 4 hours it would have taken by vehicle (one way)... I had a double appointment with the psychologist (was good and sorted some head issues out) and then went to see the orthopedic surgeon (first had to go get new X-rays taken of the hip) he looked at my wounds and said that he's very happy and surprised at how good they are looking... He is now willing to operate previously he always said no because of the risk of infection...He then looked at the new X-rays and mentioned how messed up my hip was (bone dying, bullet fragments, etc) He said he wants to probably do a hip replacement even though I am young which will limit me, wont be able to run marathons etc and if I look after the artificial hip then should last 20 +years...He then sent me for a CT scan so he could get more info and he will phone me on Friday with his final decision regarding the procedure (hip replacement or reconstruction although he thinks a reconstruction unless the CT scan reveals less damage to the hip & femur than what he can see on the X-ray) and when he would do the operation (in the next two weeks)... Thx for all messages & support

Thanks DB.

You are one tough Ranger Andrew. Hope the CT scan will show that the less invasive option is possible. Holding thumbs.

Hi Andrew. I have had a total hip replacement and not looked back. I would recommend that if you are offered one then seriously consider taking it.

I wish you all the best and trust that your recovery is swift and complete.

Regards

Pops

I did send Andrew the link to this topic.

Posted this morning in his Support Facebook page:
Andrew Desmet

Helle everyone! Hope you are all going to have a great weekend... Dr Steyn (orthopedic surgeon) gave me a call this morning and mentioned that he has looked at the CT scan and it is clear that the hip is too messed up to fix and the only option available is a hip replacement operation, he said that he would try and put in the hard ceramic variety which lasts longer but that it would depend on how many bullet fragments are in the area if there are too many he will not be able to use the ceramic variety.. Anyway.. He is planning to do the operation next week Friday - 30 August 2013 and I need to be at the hospital at 08h00 and the operation will be done that afternoon.. Not looking forward to operation but glad it's eventually going to be sorted out... Thanks for all the messages

Good luck Andrew...
At the end of it all you don't want to go into the grave peacefully and quietly in well preserved body... You want to go sort off skidding in sideways, full of bruises and scratches saying: "Man what a ride!!!"
