You should definitely go to Urikaruus.

We had our best lion sighting here in september 2012.

They entertained us for nearly two hours.

What a great thread! I decided to share something special too.

On the evening of 13 March 2013 I spent about 4 hours in Nossob hide which is overlooking the waterhole, and the sightings were great!

There were lots (30+) jackal around the entire evening and they were very quiet most of the time.

2 female lions, they literally fell down to drink, they were very thirsty and I never knew they could drink so much in one go! Afterwards they walked off towards the dunes.

They hanged around for quite a while laying down waiting for something to unexpectedly come for a drink, and then walked towards the dune in the distance. It was when they reached the dune that they started to roar and Nossob became alive with torches storming to the hide. We had a good giggle when we looked around and saw all the lights moving towards the hide. Suddenly there were 3 rows of people in the hide, all trying to see the lions, but they were far off by then. Some people left again soon, but those who decided to hang around were rewarded as the male and female came back to have another drink at 2 more occasions.

After all the excitement and just before the lights went out another spotted hyaena.

WHAT A NIGHT! I certainly didn’t feel like going to bed then and would probably have stayed much longer if the power didn't go off for the night.

Hi there,
Just returned from KTP and needless to say we had a wonderful time.
Thought I'd share this with you.
At Kamqua picnic spot we saw a female spotted Hyena with 2 youngsters. They were leaving the picnic just as we arrived and settled under a tree not far off where the cubs had a suckle.
A few days later, late afternoon, again at the same picnic area we saw one of the cubs scavinging for possible leftovers. He found a spot in the sand, where someone had emptied something, a fatty substance of sorts.

We've noticed that most people are responsible and take their waste with them (except for those who use the braai to deposit their waste). But in this instance, emptying a pot of liquid on the sand was not so smart.

(Anne-marie, hope you are well, remember Kamqua was where my son (hopefully)fixed your rented fridge. By the way we were in the same unit as u were at Urikaruus, and we also saw a leopard but unable to id).

Just because a waterhole is dry, it does not mean you should just race past. This last December holiday we stayed in Nossob for a couple of nights. One morning we drove north and had a wonderfull sighting of a brown hyena at Bedinkt. We decided to keep going north, and got to Langklaas waterhole. Those of you that know the area will know that the waterhole is a little off the road. There was also a sign at the entrance road stating that the waterhole is dry. I decided to drive past, but my kids all moaned and said they wanted to go see the dry waterhole. Oh well - don't feel like listening to this, so i might as well take a quick detour.....

Image

Image

Could you believe there were three beautiful young male lions lying in the road next to the dry waterhole. We sat taking photos, and watched as one after the other vehicle went racing past.

You can just imagine how "windgat" the kids were after this sighting.....
