africatravelchannel and other Mites reading this thread. I also just want to add my latest experience of two male lions chasing our car more or less in the Montrose area during our holiday end December/begin January this year! You can read about it in my latest Trip Report: The (Green) Auob and (Dry) Nossob in Dec/Jan. It was very exciting, but not pleasant when I had to drive faster and faster to eventually shake then off!! In 2006 a lion 'attacted' a car and trailer at Marie se Draai and bit off all the electrical wires at the rear of the vehicle and damaged the trailer with huge scratch marks!

John Varty says Pepper spray works. Just spray it on the tires not the lion. The smell is very strong.

Oh my! I think we are going to have to doubly ensure a good hire car insurance policy before our first visit next May....just in case!

They were up to their old tricks again a week or so ago. Just having a wee nibble on wing mirrors, door handles, bumper bars, mud flaps... anything that stuck out a bit.

It was very funny. I don't know why they just didn't move?!?

This was a couple of hundred metres north of Montrose waterhole.

I have seen lions doing this twice. Once just south of nossob where they came up to our car and were playing with the tires and wing mirrors as well as having a good look thru the window to see what was in the back. We were in a brown toyota cressida.

6 months later we saw the same group who were now much larger. The big male went up to a red bakkie. He tried to remove a water jerrican which was chained to the back window. He then went to the back tire and bit it. The tire popped a jet of air shot into his face. He then got up and walked off with his mates. It was unbelievable.

Apparently these lions are well known. They are particularly fond of red cars. They are known as the tire biters

I have a red bakkie, and gapped it as I saw this youngster run towards the cars at Rooikop waterhole, 5 km south of Nossob. He wasnt fussy, he just went for the tyres of the guy behind me as we watched from 25 metres away. They also seem to like metallic cars. Come to think of it, any will do.

I have heard that Citronella oil, or Get-Off that you can buy in pet shops can keep your Tyres safe.

Any truth to this?

Going to be in KTP in 34 days, and would prefer to preserve my tyres. :P

Can't wait to get back in May for a 4th trip.

For tyre protection, use a paint brush to paint the tyre side walls with the hottest chilli sauce you can find, repeat every few days if you're very worried. Keeps cats (and dogs) away.
