 Not a little chap... rather non-breeding female (dark eye and white underparts).

The reference to blue-grey legs is a very good ID feature to underline (or add) in your fieldbook! Thanks for the reminder WTM!

Which Weaver? Lesser Masked? I had hoped it might be Red-headed but now doubting that. Seen in the south of Kruger.

salamanda, the shot is a bit tough from an ID feature PoV as it was taken with the sun backlighting the subject, obscuring detail... However, I think I can see a hint of a light coloured eye and blue legs / feet. So, I think your ID of LMW is

I'm puzzled by this weaver, the only illustration in my birdbook for a bird with a dark upper bill and pale lower bill is the female village weaver, but this bird has a pale eye. The golden weaver has the pale eye, but not the mottled back or the bi-colour bill. So I'm flummoxed. :wall: Am I missing something obvious? Any ideas or suggestions? Seen at Mapungubwe in late October 2014.

Thanks so much for the ID, Snoobab. The illustration in my field guide (Roberts) doesn't really show the bi-colour bill that is so prominent on my bird, nor is it mentioned in the description of the female, so your pointing me in the right direction is much appreciated

Is this a golden weaver? With the heavy black bill and the pale eye, it seems the likeliest choice? Seen at Crooks Corner in KNP in early November 2014.

Two photographs of this LBJ: in the Shingwedzi area in early April 2015. First pic was quite aggressively edited (taken against a grey sky and the subject was quite dark in the original), second was the only one where I could get the bird in focus in the acacia tree. I am guessing that this is a juvenile weaver? If so, then my next guess would be Lesser masked or Southern masked weaver? It is difficult to see the eye colour and the legs just appear dark (not grey or pinkish) in the pictures. Or am I way off here?

Against the light the legs would appear to be different from the second shot where the legs show up dark grey. In both pix I see a light iris - lesser masked weaver...
