Hi richprins,

thanks for the photo - but a few things keep me still confused:
- the horns seem to be too long for a steenbuck (usually the horns are shorter than the ears)
- the ears aren´t marked on the inside
- he is pale on the sides of face, above the eyes and on throat (like an oribi looks like according to the guidebook)

And he looks different to the one on the following photo:

Image

So are there any subspecies of steenbucks? Or is it really that difficult to distinguish between different species from time to time? Or is it obvious and it is just me who cannot see the differences? 8)

(maybe i should post in the mammal section now as here is only asked for location of rare species?)

Wow, excellent sighting, G@mespotter. Lucky you.

But.............don´t you mean the Tihongonyeni waterhole along the S143 (Tropic of Capricorn Loop)? The S114 is in the South.

My hubby and I saw a Suni way up north, looked very much like Richprins picture. Then we went on a night drive, and told the people we had Suni that day, a couple of them said Suni don't occur in the Kruger. I was definately not a Steenbok, of a Grysbok!!! It was being very secretive and as I was going to take a pic gone :naughty: :naughty:

Richprins we are going to the Kruger in September where would you suggest that we stay in order to see Eland, we have not seen them for like 20 years, last time was at Elandskuil  ! Keep well, Mama Faru

@ Mama fariu

I've seen Eland (and Tsessebe) a couple of times on the tar road between Shingwedzi and the turnoff to Sirheni. Late afternoon drinking water at one of the waterholes on that road. So either of those two camps should be a good option.

Just returned from a great trip to Punda Maria and Tsendze!! Our first time in the far north!

We saw Eland on 3 separate occasions!! Once at Klopperfontein dam and 2x on the S49/S50 near Tsendze. We found Tsessebe at the Mooiplaas waterhole on the S49/S50 junction every day. Also saw a beautiful Sharpe's grysbok near Punda.

Btw, are there always as many Ostrich and Kori bustard around the Tihongonyeni waterhole? Breeding ground?

Silly question perhaps...how do I upload pics?

We recently saw a herd of sable (approximately 7 or 8) on the Voortrekker Road about 4kms from Pretoriuskop - have managed to see sable the last 3 times we have visited Pretoriuskop so have been very lucky!!!

On our last trip in March we saw the elusive Pretoriuskop Lichtenstein Hartbeest on the Voortrekker road, about halfway. He was grazing with a herd of Impala, so we almost missed him.... Also saw about 9 Sables at Kruger tablets (their home). 2 Sharpe's just before the H8 (Olifants) turnoff from Letaba, one of our most Southern sightings of them. 1 Reedbuck between Satara and Olifants.

The rare antelopes eluded us for a few trips, but looks like they are back again.
