I would say myth. Reports were posted here about people seeing elephants lying down and the thought that it was dead. But they were only sleeping.

Myth
I read some of the rangers stories and he said on a morning walk they witnessed mum ellies lying and sleeping and the baby ellies actually trying to climb on them and cause havoc. So some ellies do actually lie down and sleep...
