Great sightings inado   Miera really is a lovely leo and so happy to be on show. I feel quite spoilt when i have a sighting of her. Really well done with all the ID's. Its great to see that the guide is working and allowing successful identifications.

If you can send me the original pics of the two you've struggled with then i might be able to spot a pattern and make an ID. As Wanderw said if you could also fill in the spread sheet then i can take all the details of the sightings without making any mistakes. Again thanks for your help.

@ GavinW: Hi there Gavin, We saw this fellow not far from Leeudril on the 28th April this year at about 10am. When I looked at the pictures you have taken at Leeudril just a few days later, (look at the ring of spots around the neck), it would appear that it could be the same leopard, only difference is that mine is distinctly male! If yours is a female, there must be a (possible) mating pair and therefore two leo's in the same area at the time!

Thanks for posting the sighting Fotomaljohan  , and thanks for reposting your pic GavinW.
So you did correctly identify your leopard with GavinW's and it is indeed a new leopard (already included in the newest version of the guide, but not out yet). We had been wondering about whether it was a male or female as i had heard mixed reports but i think your photos are quite clear as to the answer :D

Would you mind sending me your sighting (on my spreadsheet) and the original pics so that i could some of them in the guide.
Many thanks and keep the sightings coming

We saw these two about 3k's N of Houmoed on Wed 20th June. When we came back to TR after spending some time at Nossob we were told by a few people that there had been a leopard on a kill in a tree right next to the road the whole of the previous day but that it had gone by the time we arrived that Tuesday afternoon. Needless to say we were rather dissapointed but hey, its the Kalahari and we know that timing is everything ... :wall:

We decided to do the Leeudril 4x4 trail after our morning drive on Wednesday ( I drove it and it was BRILLIANT ) and we headed north towards Auchterlonie for tea - needless to say we never got there ... Elf spotted a few spots in a tree ... we stopped ..... and she came down and we spent about 45 min with her all to ourselves before the next car arrived ...

Cagn ...

Image

and while we were watching her I suddenly looked up and there about 50m away in the road in front of us was ...

Image

Cagn's mother - the Auchterlonie female  We only managed to get a few shots before she wandered off across the riverbed. Sorry about the side of the car in the shot - too many photographers in the same car !!!

We originally thought she was smaller than Cagn but in retrospect Cagn might have just looked bigger seeing as she was about 5 metres away from us and her mom wasn't . The light was pretty bad at times - we had 3 days of rain and this was one of them ....

Fabulous fabulous ... ( oh yes, and on the morning drive we had 3 cheetahs and after the leopards, 2 different lion sightings - 1 + 7 ) LOVE THE KGALAGADI
We can do no great things, only small things with great love. ~Mother Teresa

Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same ...

From: Fourth time "lucky" in Kgalagadi - May 2012.
Under Travel Tales

On 5 May we had this sighting a few hundred meters from Batulama waterhole. She ( Miera ) was resting in the shade at 2:45 pm and I did not expect her to get up. We were told of Cheetahs further on and we drove on.

Image

Image

The next few days we were in Nossob. From 12 May we were in Cabin number 1 at Urikaruus. On our first night at 7:05 I was standing at the fire and saw something was drinking water at the water hole. I could not belief my eyes, it was a Leopard. I did not expect it so early, but got this photo as proof.

Image

The Leopard only took one or two sips of water and walked off to the dunes on the other side of the river. Well she at least had the adrenaline flowing and the meat and wine tasted so much better.

The next morning I went on a drive on my own. I decided to go towards Rooibrak, hoping for the Leopard we saw a week ago at Batulama. Our next door neighbour in number 2 left earlier and he also went south. I was watching his tracks in the road and just were he reversed a car came from the opposite direction and told me my neighbour told him he saw a Leopard.

I soon spotted her on the other side of the river. It was Tsamma.

Image

Image

She walked from tree to tree and climbed in almost every big one.

Then she moved to our side but gave as a hard time to get a clear picture.

The cars got more and it became difficult to get close to her. Then she crossed the road and
disappeared over the dune.

I stayed with her from 8:10 till 10:15.

After the sighting of Tsamma I went back to Urikaruus for lunch. We then went south to Auchterlonie and back.

It was about 3:20 and for some reason I decided to first go in to Urikaruus camp before we continue to 13 de boorgat. I had a quick look at my photo’s of Tsamma. The Crows were very noisy and made me look up.

Unbelievable, there were three Crows flying and escorting a LEOPARD down the dune opposite our cabin. I shouted at Jacques, who was on the boardwalk, and he informed the other quests who were at home.

She was not amused by her escort and walked from tree to tree before she came in the open at 3:30. She was still escorted by the Crows.

She spend some time at the water and at 3:35 she left. She left between cabin 3 and 4 and went up the hill towards the main road.

What more can one ask for.

That night we saw Spotted Hyaena, Caracal, Cape Fox and Springhare at the water hole.

Hi all,
So after so many recent sighting, a lot of which were new leopards here is the latest updated guide - found through my website (link in my signature).
Changes to the guide are obviosuly the new leopards, but i've also managed to update a few pictures too
- Kagiso - this is the new guy that was seen around Leeuwdril earlier in the year...thanks go to GavinW, Muhammad Mia and Fotomaljohan.
- Ingwe - She is the first leopard seen at Tierkop on the lower dune road. Its great that we are finally getting sighitngs on the dune roads, if anyone has any other dune road sightings then i'd love to hear about them. Thanks Dantheman.
- Barolong and Tsamma - some new pics, thanks WillieV.
- Isabis - Our first true dune leopard seen at Bitterpan, thanks Sim....again other similar sightings would be great.
- Langklaas - Earlier estimated birth date due to a March 2006 sighting. A note of warning here. The estimated birth dates are just that....estimated and quite possibly wrong. So when using them as an identification discriminator take them with a pinch of salt :) Ages based on these dates should be treated as a lower limit to the age of the leopard.
- Kham - The new guy in the north, thanks AFRICAT.

In the historical section we also have some additions/changes.
- L-4 - Tswana's 2009 cub, thanks AFRICAT.
- Grootkolk-1 - Some update pics thanks to RichardJ

And thanks to everyone for their help with this. I really do appreciate you sending me both your sightings and your higher res pics for the guide. I think you can see that the better pics do really make a difference.

Good luck using the guide and if you have any additions do please contact me.
Happy leopard spotting :)
