Swimming upstream

Unread post by H. erectus » Wed Mar 03, 2010 5:39 pm

Found this little cat fish (Barbel) splashing about in what was a fast diminishing rain water puddle in my driveway. It was barely 100mm in length.

Now what fascinates me about this little animal is that it was nigh 800metres from any life sustaining water source for it to survive. It is a known fact that catfish can cover vast distances on dry land. We have many predators that may have snatched it up and dropped. However this is not where it ends.

Some years back we had a similar incident but with common river crabs. They were dashing all over the tar road. Must be a kilometre from the water.

And some years before that I actually found a terrapin at the gate. 600 metres from the water.

Is this a signal of some kind, indicating some natural calamity?
It cannot be made more or less for that matter but it can be altered to suit.- The universe.

Catfish (Barbers) saga near Lower Sabie

Unread post by Oribie » Wed Oct 12, 2011 1:53 pm

Sunday 2 October 2011.
At the hide between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge, on the dirt road, we saw 100+ catfish 'trapper' in a small pool with 20+ Marabou and some Monitor Lizards waiting to have a feast.
I take it the catfish emerged from their winter mud 'cocoons' after some rain fell a couple of days earlier and became trapped in this small pool.
What a disturbing sight to see all these fish bundled together trying to get away from the Marabou.
Friday 7 October 2011.
We went back to see what happened.
There were still a lot of catfish, 70+, but no Marabou and very little water - mostly mud.
There smaller catfish seem to have gone and only the real biggies were left.
I estimated many were over 1m long.
They tried to hide in the mud but their backs were open to the sun.

Hi Oribie

We were at the hide yesterday. The monitor lizzard, marabous & fish eagles still hanging around. The mud is quite thick. I will try to upload a pic. It is a sad sight to see...all the catfish trying to get in under the mud...

This is actually no problem. Some catfish will survive and live another day.
For the rest the eggs have been laid, and they will be the next generation.
Not posting much here anymore, but the photo's you can follow here There is plenty there.

2 Lizards were feasting on a decent sized Catfish while we were there. Will post a photo of it later.

There was no more water in the pool, but still many barbels alive - really amazing

Well done Wanderlust! Beautiful picture of a sad sighting, but that's the way of nature. :(
