These are plants that I saw in Kgalagadi in September 2007. Can anyone help with ID?

2. There were lots of these plants along the Lower Dune road.

#2: I'm going to take a flyer at Gnidia polycephala, Januariebos. It flowers in spring, which fits with the timing, and the overall plant looks very similar to your pic. Apparently its unpalatable and poisonous when flowering. The roots are used to treat earache, toothache and stomach ache.
