Would have loved to see them when we were there. I was looking on the net for a sound bite when I found that little guy....did hear a very strange cry at night at Skukuza... :hmz: wonder if it was a bushbaby

Hey ils;

We found these guys in August 2009 and August 2010 at Skukuza. I'm not sure if they are the type that you are looking for, but these photos were taken in the same tree a year apart????

All that I can say is that they are one of the most difficult animals that I have ever tried to photograph.

I have seen them in 3 different camps:

- Punda Maria in a tree near the safari tents
- Letaba in a tree near the D circle
- Satara under the roof between the reception and the shop (this was only 3 weeks ago)

We have a lot of thick tails up north, you will be able to find them in any northern camp

I have a family of 6 living in a large nyala-tree in my garden :D It's great if you braai on a friday evening and the bushbabies sit only 2 meters away watching you!

Heard and saw lots of thick-tailed bushbabies in Skukuza during the last few days.
Was one foraging on the ground at the shop 15mins after closing time and 2 on th toilet roof nearby foragng for insects on the thatch.
There haunting calls at nigh are great!

Put the time in at first dark and I think you will be rewarded with seeing this normally elusive animal!

They are indeed very common at Pafuri Camp, often running to and fro on the boardwalks, or else screaming their heads off in every second tree.

Back in the days when I stayed at Skukuza (90s), they were easily seen around the shop and cafetaria as soon as things quieted down after closing time, running over the thatch and looking for yummy leftovers. I should imagine that's still the case.

Hey Twigga...

Sort of difficult to explain but something like a series of screams like that of a human baby almost. A few books also seem to describe it that way...but I promise once you've heard it you will never forget it! Very eerie especially when you are walking around on your own

Thanks o-dog

I'm then 100% sure who the culprit was that jumped on our tent last year at Skukza, definitly the weirdest sound I 've ever heard!

Hi all!

We stayed at Skukuza in June, in a cottage near to where the doctors office is, near the swimming pool there. We had about 5 thick tailed bush babies visit us at our braai, they were quite brave and came quite low in the tree! It was so amazing to see so many at one time, they are such cute creatures, and their call is quite something to hear as well!
The following night at Berg n Dal as we sat outside braaing I was saying I missed seeing the bushbabies. We could hear a noise in the bushes and thought it was a bird.....but turned out to be a lesser bushbaby!!! What a birthday treat!

Hope you get lucky and see some too!

You will definitely see them at the tests. We’ve camped right next to the tents in July and they visited us each night.

Had friends staying at Monis guest house end of June/beginning of July. They had bush babies on 2 nights running on their deck.
Have seen them in the campsite near the pool before
