Sometimes I'm intelligent, but I have to admit that I'm totally confused right now.

Don't understand those four languages up there:

Are they real languages, or what? I know there's a joke here, but can't figure it. :(

The canton of Grisons ( German Graubünden; Alemannic Graubünde or Graubündä, Romansh : Grischun, French : Grisons, Lombard Grisun) is the largest and easternmost of the 26 cantons of Switzerland . It is also the only officially trilingual canton ( German , Romansh and Italian ).

I am Afrikaans

In my book your mother tongue is who you are and anybody who forgets that is like a ship without a rudder but in the next breath a wise man once told me that the more languages you can speak the more friends you can make. For a bit of added spice I speak english(duh) german zulu Fanakalo and some portugese and a few others.

Another thing this man told me is never to disrespect another person's language as this would be considered a personal insult and never to make fun of them if they try to speak your language and it comes out sounding strange as this is a sign of respect to you.
Adventure is out there. Go find it

So true, Sparks! Respect for another language is simply an extension of respect for another person, and acknowledging his attempts in your language is a wonderful way to gain respect in return.

Just before I went to France, I was told how rude the people there are to people speaking English. So, I thought, what would happen if the tables were reversed: a Frenchman expects me to speak his language! I fully understood their consternation, so I got hold of a phrase list and learnt about 20 basic phrases in French. All I would do is, with every French person I met, I would attempt to say something. Sometimes I got a pitiful smile, or a genuine guffaw at my ridiculous-sounding attempts, but mostly people were courteous and I almost had no problems being in France and interacting with the people there!

So, your wisdom is indeed the way to go about things with foreigners.
