Hi everyone.

Is this a rock monitor or a water monitor lizard? We saw him at our tent in Skukuza in March.

Hi Roaneric
What you have here is a Rock Monitor
The best way to tell is by the shape of the head ( colouring is also different) Water monitor is darker and also has yellowish spotting )
The water monitors have a far more streamlined head ( more slipstreamed for swimming)

The rock monitor has a more bulbous head shape ( the older they get the bulbous head is more noticeable)

We found quite a few up in the trees next to the Limpopo now in March.

Might be because of the drought and lack of water they preffer the trees ?
