Acquiring SIM card

Unread post by Sobian » Tue Apr 19, 2016 5:18 pm

Dear all,

we have been visiting the Kruger National Park for some years now and are making preparations for an upcoming visit next week! Unfortunately we have misplaced the Southafrican simcard that we were using before and have to get another one. Normally we would stop by a mobile phone shop (I believe MTN) on the way from Joburg to Malelane gate but this time we are taking a connecting flight to Skukuza Airport and thus are not driving outside the park. So advice is needed...

Where would be the best place to get a SIM card with Internet credit? Joburg Airport or are there also possibilities at Skukuza airport and/or shop?

Best regards,
Sobian

Hi Sobian

I suggest that you buy one at Johannesburg airport. I do not recall Skukuza airport offering such a service, and nor do the shops in the park.

I also suggest that you buy a Vodacom sim, we find MTN not to cover the park very well, Vodacom is far better.

As you clear customs, but before you exit the restricted area there is a Virgin mobile counter that will give you a free sim card. my only issue with them is I'm not sure how readily available Virgin mobile top up air time is

Dear DinkyBird and Pjw, thanks for your fast replies.

I seem to recall staff members buying top ups for there mobile phones at the park shops. You think this might not be available for all providers?

Yes, they do top up airtime - I will try and find out which.

But you cannot top up a data sim at the tills. We take an extra one with us, and that I have to top up online using internet banking.

I would also advise Vodacom. And getting that topped up is easier too as it is used by so many people. Will also ask around about the airtime side of things.

We use the Vodacom shop in the airport, upstairs as you exit customs in the meeting area.
Have a great trip.

others have recommended http://www.b4igo.travel sim card pickup at OT.

order a call and data sim capacity you need and topups can be preloaded or online.

just need passport and sim expires 30 days after you leave.... no need for sa registration

have ordered one for forthcoming trip.

Here is the reply from Kruger's Lesley in PR:

Lesley Nyawo wrote:The Park Shops sell airtime for the service providers as follows:

1. Vodacom
2. MTN
3. Cell C
4. Virgin Mobile
5. 8ta

The machines only produce prepaid airtime vouchers and not data bundle vouchers. The best option is to load the airtime then convert it into data bundles. The respective network operator has call centre agents that are available to assist guests with the process of converting airtime into data bundles, The call centre numbers are on the vouchers.

Dear all,

thank you very much for the trouble you took to offer such detailed advice!

I'm now sure that we will be able to get adequate air time and data to keep the homefront updated.

Best regards,
Sobian

Hello Sobian
Hope you had a nice trip to Kruger? Could you please give an update on this? How and where did you acquire the SIM on this trip and what sort of data packge did you purchase and how much data did you use? Perhaps an avarage cost for it?
Thank you very much
