No mosquito nets Desi, but the windows and door have screen netting on them so just make sure you keep that all closed.

The windows have mosquito screen. Nowhere to hang a mosquito net. Use mosquito spray, burn mosquito pads or coils. Keep fan/aircon on during night.

Thanks Elsa & Hippotragus :gflower: I am not sure if running the fan and AC will be an option during the first week of August. Can we buy bug spray, mosquito pads etc. at the camp stores?

HI Desi Traveller. You sure can buy all sorts of mosquito repellents at all main camp shops. So that should not be a problem at all.

Thanks Kallis1786 :gflower: What are the working hours for the camp stores? Are they open on weekends?

Yes as far as I know they are open all year round.

I may be wrong but operating hours on the shops depend on gate times, They are open for an hour after gates close, and I am not too sure on what time they open, but they do open quite early, I have seen shops open at 8am, and never really tried buying something before that time since am mostly on drives. Maybe some other mites might be able to tell you exact times.

Kallis, you are right about them being open for an hour after gate closing time.

I have bought 'stuff' at Skuks and Mopani at 7 am in Summer.

Hi - I am planning a potential last minute trip to Kruger during the busy Christmas - New Years season. I will be in Cape Town for a couple weeks and may decide to fly out to JNB and stay in Kruger for a few days. If I want to keep my options open - is it possible to book last minute accommodation at one of the camps myself, or would it be better to go with a tour company?

As far as getting out to the park, I understand there is a shuttle from JNB or I can possibly pay the extra cost to fly out to MQP. If flying to JNB, there is a 6 hour shuttle that takes you to the park, but how do I arrange to get from the shuttle stop to my camp? Are there any options besides the shuttle?

Can I assume that all camps have scheduled game drives that I can just join?

Pretty much any advice for leaving this up to a last minute decision would be great :)

Good morning Clusterflux and a warm welcome. :gflower:

I have just had a quick look at the availability over the seasonal holidays and there still availability. You might have to take what you can, but I do see some pretty good camps to choose from. It would not be necessary to go through an agent. I usually go through Sanparks reservation, at 0124289111. I suggest you possibly do that asap.

Clusterflux, the biggest problem is going to be your transport. Is there anyway that you can rent a car? This issue has come up frequently and it is an issue where there are limited alternatives. Perhaps someone can assist you more in this regard.

Drives and walks can be booked once at camp. Most camps have a few options. Prices vary according to activity.

Good luck with the planning.

Hi clusterflux.

SA Airlink fly from Cape Town direct to Skukuza. Not sure about availability for your preferred days. If you are able to drive, hiring a car at the Skukuza airport would make sense IMO. Morning / Evening drives also subject to availability. Hope all goes well - act fast though.
Book airfare, book car, book accomm. make sure you get back for your already booked return flight(if going back). Peace of cake.

Warm welcome to the forum clusterflux,
as the others have already said, getting to the park is a problem without your own transport.
Your best option is what s2000ap has suggested, taking a flight directly into Skukuza Airport from Cape town or Jhb and where there are cars to hire or you can arrange a shuttle to take you to Skukuza camp from where you can arrange to take the various guided drives, walks etc.
but without your own transport you will be pretty much confined to the camp other than when you are out on the booked and guided drives.
There is a restaurant there and a view over the river into the park from the restuarant or benches next to the fence.
Good luck.
