As far as I know, the distance on "old" N4 and the "new" Schoemanskloof N4 are just about the same.

Thanks Hippotragus

In that case, it is a "no-brainer". I will go the Schoemanskloof route.

Yoda - I forgot to mention that at the moment there are huge signs advising you to go Schoemanskloof because of the roadworks. As I said, I always go that way - roadworks or not.

Have a great trip.

I think I know roughly where the turnoff is.
It's not far after "Millies" as you come down the hill?

So I decided to use the Schoemans Kloof route.
Going to Kruger it was ok, minimal traffic and a pleasure to drive.

Coming home - another story
It was a Saturday and loads of trucks were using the route. At one point I got stuck behind a train of 5 trucks. The front one was litterally doing 20km/h. At the first passing point, the truck behind him decided he had to pass, but he was only doing about 30km/h.
And so on.
Instead of them letting a massive queue of cars pass (must have been at least 50 cars behind me) , they were all over taking each other. Or attempting to.
I eventually got past just before the N4 again, but it must have added at least 45 mins to my journey.
Anyhow, not much I could have done about it

That's a shame, Yoda. It is normally a better option, but, with the current road works on the old N4 route, some of the slow trucks are using Schoemanskloof (they normally go on the old route).

Anyway, a small price to pay for a trip to Kruger!

Absolutely.
And we got home safely, which is all that mattered.

Good Morning Everyone :gflower: :k

I need some help planning my route to Satara on the 24th of December.

I am booked in at Satara, and according to the time I am planning to leave home will be around 12:30 to 13:00 so either I can reach Phalaborwa Gate at 15:00 and enter from there and drive to Satara which the minimum time I think its 3 hours so I reach Satara around 18:00 which is tempting me because I get to be in the Park earlier, but am really scared for time.

The other option is I drive to Orpen Gate in which case I'll be arriving at the gate around 16:00 to 16:30, but that could mean that I have a more relaxing drive to Satara.

But now I am totally confused on which would be a better option

What would you all do?

The S131 has been quite busy the past few weeks with lots of sightings of Lions, Leopard and wilddogs
.

Kallis if the above is the case, you will be cutting it very fine if you decide to go via Phalaborwa
Remember the camp gates close at 18h30, believe me it is not fun to have to bypass a good sighting because of the time factor :x

I agree with Nkulu...head down to Orpen and enjoy a more relaxing drive to Satara.Such great waterholes on that road any way and an early evening stop at Nsemani will definitely produce some animal sightings.

Thanks Nkulu and Mischief.

It makes perfect sense to do that. I know exactly how it feels not to stop for a Lion Sighting :wall: :wall: :wall:

Because last year I had to drive from Balule to Croc Bridge, and the amount of sightings I had that day was something else, saw Lions, Saw a fight between a Jackel and a Honey Badger, saw Cheetah, and saw Leopard, that eventually my last Lion sighting I didn't have time for because I was booked for a sunset drive from Croc Bridge.

So I guess let me just stick to Orpen Entry, and that road has a tendency to produce a beautiful sighting as well. I remember one of my best action packed sighting happened on the Orpen to Satara Road, where a Leopard had taken down an Impala, and within seconds we were surrounded by Hyena's, Jackels, and the poor Leopard got chased away.
