Thank you, Elsa. You've been absolutely brilliant! I've printed out the form so will have it ready.

And I've now managed to upgrade our unit at Olifants to a BD3UZ so I think we may get an even better view from that and I'm still keeping an eye out for a river view! All adding to the excitement!!

Thanks again

Best Route to Orpen gate from JHB

Unread post by wit111 » Mon Oct 24, 2016 9:46 am

Hi all,

I know this is generally a pretty well covered topic elsewhere but there doesn't seem to be anything very recent.

Can anyone provide an update as to the road conditions between Dullstroom - Lydenburg - Ohrigstad - Hoedspruit? It seems the road condition between Dullstroom and Lydenburg is not great?

Any other suggested route?

We did the Dullstroom - Lydenburg - Ohrigstad - tunnel - Hoedspruit road 2 weeks ago. Slow, but no problem. Watch out for stray cattle on the road between Ohrigstad and Hoedspuit.

I tend to agree with Rooies - I normally take that route, but haven't been in that area as recently as him.

Just be on the lookout for potholes all the way!! Take it easy and enjoy the scenery - quite spectacular in places. Yes, watch out for cattle when you go past some of the little villages.

Remember to take the R531 to the right, about 15km before hitting Hoedspruit. It is clearly marked "Orpen Gate", Klaserie. It cuts off quite a bit and avoids the town.

Great, thanks all.

I think we will head up to Lydenburg and then go Long Tom - Sabie - Bushbuckridge to avoid the potholes after the tunnel.

Hi there

We are planning to drive via Polokwane and Giyani to Punda Maria gate on 26 December. We are four ladies traveling and i want to confirm that this will be the best and a safe route for us.

It will be the first time that we use this route to Kruger.

Thanks

Hi linnfrompotch.

I have done that route several times - once with 2 other ladies and a few times with hubby. We have never had any problems. Obviously, don't invite trouble - keep car doors locked, only stop in places that look safe etc. We have filled up at a petrol station in Giyani with no problems.

Have a wonderful (and safe) trip.

Joburg to Orpen, Kruger

Unread post by Gazmando » Mon Oct 31, 2016 2:25 pm

Hi
I will be driving form Jo'burg to Kruger in late January 2017. My flight into Jo'burg doesn't land until midday and once I've sorted the car hire out it may well be 13.30 before we set off, so I thought it would be best to do the journey in two parts, rather than rushing to Orpen and chancing making it before the gate shuts.
So I was wondering if anybody had any advice regarding where to stop overnight middway or maybe three-quarters of the way to Kruger. It would enable us to have a leisurely drive, stopping for dinner and a nights sleep before setting off bright and early to Orpen gate.
Many thanks!

Hi Gazmando and welcome. You must be getting excited about your trip - not long now.

Depending which route you intend taking to Orpen Gate, you can look for accommodation in or near Hazyview or in or near Polokwane. If you Google, you will find quite a selection -from B&Bs to hotels. We cannot mention names on this forum, but if you are stuck, post again and someone can private message some suggestions.

There is a small town called Dullstroom on the R540 road which goes north from the N4 main highway leading towards southern Kruger. It is a holiday town in a very pretty area, and there is lots of accommodation there. You would then continue north on the R540, join up with the R36 which takes you through beautiful scenery and down the escarpment to Hoedspruit and Orpen gate.

Dullstroom is about a three hour drive from OR Tambo airport, probably a bit more than half way.

Hi Gazmando, you must be very excited.

The road from the airport to outside of J'burg can be unpredictable. Dullstroom is not a bad idea at all. It means that you will not be driving in the dark. The road to Orpen can have potholes, so it is better to do it in good light.

I will be travelling to southern Kruger on Monday 14 November
N12 Germiston to Witbank and then N4 to Neslpruit and Melalane

I have heard there is a Stop and Go near Waterval Bo with a waiting time of approx 20 mins.

Should I rather just wait at the stop and go?
Or go Schoemanskloof?
How much further is that route?
Also, I believe that there are not many passing places and one can get stuck behind mine trucks?
So maybe just as frustrating?

I am also planning on leaving Jhb around 7am.
So maybe a bit of traffic until after Germiston, and then not much as a weekday and not school holidays?

Any input appreciated.

I have driven the N4 via Waterval Boven last Tuesday.
There are 2 stops and go at the moment. I missed both green light by a minute and had to wait. I would say 25-30 minutes total.
I drove the road N4 via Shoemanskloof in April but didn't like it too much, so prefered to wait this time.
Of course if the light is green when you reach the stop and go, you can drive through so your waiting time is a matter of luck ....
I need to figure out how I can come to the KNP for 3 months
Looking for a Pel's ...

I beg to differ, elpaco! I always go Schoemanskloof - very pretty and plenty of passing points. Just watch the speed limit - some 100 km/hr and some 120 km/hr. - I got a fine in August and still don't remember actually seeing a camera!!

As far as I know, the distance on "old" N4 and the "new" Schoemanskloof N4 are just about the same.
