Been there, done that...... Yes you can hire and play!
Smiling is contagious. Start an epidemic today!

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Completed over 7 years in Kruger in my caravan.

If I was normal I wouldn't be me!

There were a few very old clubs available to hire about 2 years ago.
That makes golf even more difficult!
No such luxury as a full set though and I don't think they had ladies clubs.
Still worth the effort of acquiring or borrowing clubs to play with buck, warthogs and an elephant wandering around and the fairways lined with magnificent trees.
The hippos take great delight at grunting while you are trying to concentrate on the short hole just over the dam!

SKUKUZA GOLF COURSE

Unread post by suebfly » Wed May 07, 2014 2:35 pm

We are visiting Kruger early June & my son who is an avid golfer would like to have a round of golf at Skukuza - Can anybody tell me what the best time of day is for bird and maybe animal sightings?

The animals are on the golf course all day. But late afternoon and early mornings are the best time.

Careful not to go looking for the balls should they go in to the rough. There are often lion around.

Seriously, if a ball goes into the rough, leave it!! Lions, leopards, elephants and all the expected Kruger menu of dangerous snakes and poisonous others are there and are rarely obvious.
It's also highly advisable that your son isn't out there alone.
The course is not fenced off, and all those beloved animals that we appreciate from the safety of the car have free and unrestricted access to the course.
I've had to vacate a tee box because Mr Ellie decided that he was walking through, and have also had a friend (and the rest of the players) have to delay by 90 minutes because a pride of lion were sleeping in the fairway.

The same goes for waterholes, and water-edged shots.
There are crocs and hippos in those waterholes. Be vigilant, and have a lookout watching for you (especially the 9th tee) No pressure ...

That said, it is possibly the most unique and awesome course on this planet purely because of this.
I'd play it again in a heartbeat.

Advice? Phone a month in advance and book a cart. June days can be quite warm, and there are some sadistic uphills to walk near the end of the round :)
The simple rule to follow with all animals is one of respect.

After the floods a year or two ago the dam wall at the club house was washed away. Some enterprising golfers used the opportunity to sift through the mud to retrieve the balls which was previously being guarded by the local hippo population.

Apparently it was quite a sight to see them covered in mud! :cam:

Golf at Skukuza is a must! Highly recommended. I would go in the early morning though.

I'm a horrible golfer, but I can't think of a course I'd rather play.

I admit I am both very excited and very scared - I have been to Kruger so often but have never even thought of spending time on the golf course - now I cant wait, not that I am the golfer - I will be there to sit in the cart and keep an eye out for the animals - hopefully I can get some good photos to share after the trip. It will be my first time ever on a golf course and it will also be my 61st birthday on the day we plan to be there.  :P :P

Mornings are best. It's nice and fresh. I've only played it once and it was really nice. It was on my wedding anniversary. Why I was in the park and my wife at home I haven't figured out yet. Something to do with points expiring, so I was packed off to have fun alone. I played after checking out of my time share. I met a lovely German couple and we walked the course as we all had trolleys to pull. I got a hole in one! Great feeling that was. On the second nine I almost did it again on the same hole. It's a nine hole course. I missed the birdie putt, but what the heck. I was playing golf in the park. Talk about a walk in the country! I must play it again oneday.

Are you permitted to go and have a meal at the club if you are not golfers at all, but just want to have a meal and a look around?
