You would have been absolutely safe in Umhlanga and even in Durban.
The attack on migrants have been in areas that tourists would not want to venture near.
Enjoy your trip!

Thanks. I know news reporters do tend to make things sound as dramatic as possible, and the riots have been shown again and again on news broadcasts here. I'll be asking local advice as I go also about which spots to avoid and won't be driving at night. I'm very much looking forward to my travels. My main regret about missing the Durban area was that I was considering also driving up to the wetlands of St Lucia, but now have booked my return flight and won't have time for that. Next time ...
For half a century I looked for an excuse to visit Africa and finally said to my son "Let's just go." Never regretted it, and about to return for my third trip to Kruger.

After 40 odd years of going to Kruger , we'll be staying over in Malelane town for the first time this coming weekend. We only decided to get a quick Kruger fix yesterday and needless to say we couldn't find accommodation inside , but managed to get a self-catering place in Malelane Town. My question is not about shopping though , but were to find a decent meal in Malelane on Saturday night as we'll arrive after 7pm and won't be in any mood for cooking/braaing. Any good restaurants there ? PM me if this type of question is not allowed here please

I hope it is OK to reply.....because the 2 restaurants I will mention are both on the N4 and highly visible anyway! The first is the ubiquitous Wimpy on the right driving into Malelane, and the second is Spur on the left at the 2nd traffic lights as you leave towards Kruger. There are others too, and the place you are staying in might have recommendations.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Thanks EJ - might just get to see you if you're on Gate Duty at Malelane on Sunday or Monday morning

Hello

I have tried to find an answer but have not found what I am looking for. Please excuse, if I post a question that was already answered earlier.

As we will be in the park for quite a long time (6 weeks) we will need to do some shopping outside of the park.

Is it possible to just leave at any gate and return an hour or two later, or do we have to fill out some paperwork. Is there something like a "park passport" that we have to present?

Another question concerning what to shop:
we have a 4x4 camper which means we always carry everything with us. Is it advisable to buy fruits such as orange or mango or will this attract for example ellies to check the car
Maybe a stupid question but years ago in Chobe and Moremi/Botswana we were told by the park rangers not to enter oranges into the parks as the ellies could smell them and would try to find them even in a car...

Thanks and regards
Grit

Grit, we usually leave at least once to do a top up shop. Have your reservation form and your entry permit with you. Let the gate know that you are going into town. You should not have a problem.

Hi Grit,

When you exit the gate to go shopping tell the guard there what you are doing. You will need your permit and they should mark it for a temporary exit. You'll need it to get back in again!

There is no ban or advisory about any food items going into Kruger (that I'm aware of). The Kruger ellies were never fed on oranges, unlike in other reserves, so bringing citrus in isn't a problem. Just don't bring any marula fruits in - they love them.
