Also "Nature's Melody" an LP record of the same vintage as "Klanke van die Bosveld" .

It was recorded by Dick Reucastle with narration by Hugh Rouse .

He had a nighttime recording of a Pel's fishing owl (at Pafuri) that was magic .

Tape recordings of these 2 LP's used to be on sale at Park's shops but I don't think this is the case anymore .

I´m sure you will find it or will be able to order it from a cd store.

What a brilliant CD, I think I will have to download it. Just been listening to the previews!

Just listened to them too, makes me very homesick!!!

   The most amazing for me was at Berg-en-Dal lying awake at 3:30 with tent pitched right at the fence a chorus of lions and hyenas carried on till first light.

Take me back!!!

I have fond memories of camping in a tent in the open in KNP and being woken by a leopard rasping , it carried on for minutes before it faded as the leopard moved on .
It was probably my imagination , without a fence the sounds seemed clearer and louder .
KNP is sacred. I am opposed to the modernisation of Kruger and from the depths of my soul long for the Kruger of yesteryear! 1000+km on foot in KNP incl 56 wild trails.200+ nights in the wildernessndloti-indigenous name for serval.

I posted something under "Recommended Reading" about a CD called "Night Sounds a bushveld serenade by moonlight" I recently purchased through Africa Geographic Magazine. It runs for 40 minutes (without any conventional music clips!), so it is perhaps not as long as you would like it to be, but I found it delightful - perfect for jaded city-dwelling ears...

Hippo grunting is for us one of the most memorable animal sounds at night such as at Olifants Camp but at many other Kruger camps as well. Lions and hyena kicking up a racket at Orpen and Talamati are also high on the list of favourite Kruger night sounds :D  .

The magic of KNP night sounds:

17:30 – The frantic cackle of Francolins
17:45 – The authoritative bark of Baboons
18:00 – The muffled murmur of campfire chatter
18:15 – The distant wail of the Black-backed Jackal
18:30 – The melodic call of Fiery-necked Nightjars
19:30 – The echoed call of the African Scops Owl
21:45 – The haunting whoop of the scavenging Hyena
23:00 – The booming roar of a Lion on patrol
05:30 – The alarm-clock like Francolins at it again, to wake you up
05:45 – The shrill chirp of the Woodland Kingfisher to wish you luck for the day

Repeat cycle!!!

The night time noises are the best, I can happily lie awake all night listening.

I have some favourite moments, our first ever time in lower Sabie and being woken by the chuffing sounds of a male lion at 4 am was amazing.

Also again in the early hours of the morning at tamboti, I heard a crashing and a stomping. So I gingerly opened the hatch on the door and switched the outside light on only to see the honey badger stomping up and down the steps emptying the bins, that was great.

A long wait but a 3rd trip in 2013 to look forward to:
15th Sept - Skukuza
16-17 - Tamboti
18 - Oliphants
19-20 - Lower Sabie
21 - Biyamati

I believe it was Satara but a few years back, the wife and I were trying to sleep and kept hearing backs and forth roaring followed by bellows for what seemed like hours. Because it was repeated so precise we thought the camp store had left their tape playing on a loop. The guides for the following morning walking tour asked us if we got any sleep from the big lion and buffalo fight. All I can say is wow. It was something serious.

At crocodile camp I remember hearing what sounded like dozens of car alarms going off. I ran outside the tent wondering who would let their car go all night. Some other campers were outside and told me it was fruit bats. That was truly amazing. This westerner has never heard such commotion yet always made it up at 5:30 am the following morning for the gate.

The only thing that can beat a leopard calling from under your tent would probably a lion doing tthe same thing, but I have yet to experience the latter. It helps if your tent is on a raised deck, of course.

The night sounds are amazing . The darkness adds a mystery that the same sounds during the day lack.

Our bat night sounds was in an un fenced camp on the Botswana side of the kalaghadi . We were all siting around the braai when a leopard sawed very close by. The braai was deserted in seconds......have never seen such a fast clean up and retreat

Tsendze has special memories of lions roaring near by through out the night .

Listening to a thunder and wind storm ( in a tent ) in the north of the park
