Poachers at Crooks Corner?!

Unread post by Dabchick » Tue May 03, 2016 7:25 am

My sister and I reported the presence of three suspicious men walking in the riverbed in civies, carrying (and trying to hide) rifles (appeared to our inexpert eyes to be AK47s or something similar) at Crooks Corner to the SAPS Border Post at Pafuri. After they (the suspected poachers) saw us, they hid in the scrub on the river bank. The Pafuri Ranger was going to investigate. Incident was last week Wednesday, 27 April 2016. How can we find out what happened - whether the suspected poachers were found or not?

Certainly a very worrying sighting!
I'm not too sure how to find out further other than trying to contact the place where you reported the incident.
That's why its always best to contact the emergency phone number listed on your entry permit as soon as you can as that way there will be a follow up plus they know who to contact immediately.

 No cell phone reception at Pafuri / Crooks Corner, which is why we reported it in person, but thanks Elsa - in the unhappy event that we need to report something like this again, I'll try calling first...

I understand when there is lack of cell reception and one is anxious to get it reported asap but best to get the report logged with the call centre as soon as one has signal, with all the details and to whom you have alerted as then there is a follow up.

Elsa, the closest cellphone signal when you are staying in Pafuri Border Camp is at Punda Maria, which was a HUGE shock to me as I'd assumed that since the camp is so close to the SAPS border post, of course there would be cell reception. Turns out that the SAPS at the border post use a Mozambican carrier  The camp also has NO connection with any other camp, not even by radio as used to be the case many years ago in the days before cellphones. Now everyone assumes that there will be cell reception, if not "everywhere" at least in all the camps.

Since I was staying at the new Pafuri Border Camp for five days and then going on to Mapungubwe, where I know that there is limited cell reception, I had to make a special trip back south to Punda just to alert people who would have worried had they heard nothing from me for those five days. It would have been helpful if SANParks would include the fact of NO cell recpetiion for this camp in the booking confirmation. It was definitely a considerable inconvenience -- not to mention the extra petrol required -- to have to make an unplanned trip to Punda.

I got cell reception near Pafuri Border Post via Moz server. I tested just to see. If you have international roaming there is no problem.

I think Dabchick did all that she could and should be congratulated for trying to help.

Mine is Vodacom pay as you go, so no international roaming (and international roaming is very expensive on my USA cell account) ....

Yes, I realise some people won't have international roaming. I find it very useful - at Gharagab in KTP I can get very good signal from the Namibian server! Also, on infrequent trips abroad, I have to be in contact with home and house-sitter, so it is useful.

Anyway, whatever the server etc. is, a large part of KNP is without cell reception of any kind and "incidents" always seem to happen there!

Would be useful for camp attendants to have access to radio communication, especially in case of emergency. Maybe something for SANParks to think about.

In many parts of the park up north there is no Vodacom reception, but picnic attendants happily use their phones on MTN or Cell C (check Mbabala picnic site)...

Also true in Kgalagadi -- just use a Namibian sim card in Mata Mata for perfect reception...

Hope they got those poachers!
God bless,

This was standard when I first visited Kruger in the 1980s, but with the advent of cell phones, apparently radio communication has been totally phased out.

I agree that the camp attendants should have some sort of radio contact with the nearest large camp/section ranger. In KTP there is almost no cell reception and the attendants at the wilderness camps have radios for communication. It would make sense for the staff at Pafuri Border Camp to have a radio for emergency use.

Friedrich, now, other than in Namibia, where could we get a Namibian SIM card?
From camp shops in KTP perhaps?
