It is said the Shingwedzi main gate is haunted. Some folk in the camp believe that it is the haunting spirit of the gate guard who got killed inside his room by a leopard.

I went to investigate this rumour one night whilst there. I didn't find much thou, but the guard on duty that night told me that the chains on the gate would rattle every now and then with nobody and nothing else in sight.

I never try to impose my beliefs on others..
I can only speak from what I have experienced myself...
I am very open and sensitive to energy and can often feel spirits around, not always wanted either lol !
but what you call "ghosts" are just spirits who have lost their way, (either they do not know they are dead or have ties to a specific time/place/or memory and feel as though they have unfinished business on earth.)
They are nothing to be afraid of... if you ever come across a spirit who is lost ,do not be frightened, just simply try to help them...
let them know they are dead and that they have loved ones waiting for them on the other side... most spirits once they realise they do not need to stay here... they go to the light, to their loved ones and GO HOME!

If you ever feel uncomfortable or do not want to have them around tell them to leave you alone, they can not stay where they are unwanted!

I enjoyed reading the different stories but admit I hope I do not run into any unwanted spirits on my trip... lol ;)

I must say after my tamboti stay now last week gave me new respect to the camp. I am with everyone else now THAT is truly a spine chilling place. I was too scared to walk from our tent to the bathroom, which was 50 meters from us, in full moon light.

Started walking, with a flashlight and saw some animal eyes but still got a very chilly feeling and run back took the car to the bathroom!

The man just laugh at my freakyniss!

Cool, I love ghost stories...and I must say KNP ghost stories are 10 times more scary!

The various historical sites are really eerie for me, especially Harry Wolhuter's lion attack site, Stevenson-Hamilton's resting place and the various grave sites.

I must say the Voortrekker road by Pretoriuskop gives me the heebie-jeebies!
You definitely get the feeling that you are being 'watched'...

When I was last on that road in Dec 2010 we were trying to get to Pretoriuskop before the gate closing time and we encountered some crazy white rhinos who appeared to be extremely alert as if something had spooked them!
They were blocking the road off so no one could get passed; they were standing back to back and would then move into the bush and as we tried driving further they would run back into the road in the same back to back position!
They did this 4 -5 times before finally calming down and moving back into the veld.

We were freaked out!

Kruger ghost stories, and other bizarre occurrences

Unread post by TreeQueen » Fri Nov 25, 2011 4:02 pm

I have always been fascinated by the weird things and the supernatural.
I wonder if anyone can share on similar stories...

A few years back myself and my family went on a night drive from Orpen and a young white woman took us on the drive.

When we were returning back to camp after the drive she told all of us a spine-chilling tale about her one night experience returning back to camp by herself after a drive.

She said that she was returning to Orpen and she saw something in the distance on the side of the road in the bush.
As she approached the 'thing' she could make out that it was something white.
She got to the 'thing' and to her shock she was staring straight into the eyes of a tall thin black man who was wearing like a white sheet draped around his body.
She said that he just blankly stared at her without saying a word or making any movement.
She also said that he appeared to be some sort of voodoo 'sangoma'.
She did nothing and drove off fast back to camp.

This story is extremely freaky!
Does anyone know of any related stories and if witchdoctor things happen in Kruger?

The guy could have always just been an illegal immigrant.

Even i would like to hear any bizarre stories from the bush.

Though i myself has have never come across any such incidence but I find Pretoriuskop camp spooky.
There is some sort of eeriness around and the tall trees add up the spookiness around.

I find the Voortrekker road near Pkop to be very eerie.

This is a brilliant topic even though I take it all with a huge fistful of salt. There are, however, some very eerie spots in the Park.

There is an interesting article about the ghosts of Kruger here:

http://www.vanhunks.com/lowveld1/kruger1.html

Towards the end of the article there is mention of the Voortrekker road being haunted.

There is also someone on the forums whose wife encountered the ghost in a hut in Lower Sabie!

In Bruce Bryden's book, A Game ranger remembers, he dedicated an entire chapter to a similar topic.

I on the other hand need to see somthing first before I will believe.

I wonder about spirits.
I would rather call them spirits.
I tell my own story in my trip report, Meandering down a road less travelled.
It is a report about a hike with non other than Bruce Brydon.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.

I never thought about it before, and then I got hooked on Wild Dreamer's fictional ghost stories on the blog. Now, I am not so sure anymore :hmz:

Hi Petra, I clean forgot about that in the event of things!
Weird as it may seem about me forgetting, I've been reading the legends on this thread quite eagerly over the last few days simply because I like a good goosebumpy ghost story and man, did I get a hair raiser a couple of times!
I really enjoy these stories. Hope the people give us more and more...
EEEKKK!!!

Yes, I agree, I was about to post that I had also immediately thought it could be from someone's spotlight, either the night drive vehicle or even from the camp itself.
But it does look a rather weird effect, I must admit.
