Cell phone coverage in Southern Kruger?

Unread post by KaliCA » Thu Jun 04, 2015 5:05 am

Hello, we will be traveling with friends in southern Kruger Park during July. We are from the USA and they are from Australia. We are wondering if it's worth getting a SA SIM card for our phones so we can stay in touch while game driving.
Is there any cell phone coverage at all in southern Kruger? We will travel from B and D to Croc Bridge, to LS, to Satara and Talamati.
Thanks for your help. K.

Definitely well worth getting a SA SIM..............much cheaper than "roaming" as long as your phone will accept it.

Plenty of coverage in the south of the park, in and around the camps.

Hope you all have a wonderful trip!!!

Hi KaliCa,

I agree with everyone. Just to note that Talamati has got no reception, they say you can get a faint signal if you are up in the one birdhide, but then you have to stand on one leg and hold an umbrella pointing to Orpen...

I have tried to get cellphone signal at Talamati, even with the use of a high yield antenna, but to know avail.

If you can afford it, you can rent a satellite phone (Inmarsat) if you have to be reachable all the time.

Alternatively, for vehicle to vehicle communication, bring a two way radio set along!

Hello!

Just came back to Italy from an awesome Kruger experience.

I had a Vodacom SIM. Coverage in Satara was perfect and 3G Internet worked great. Coverage in Lower Sabie was also great but I couldn't get Internet to work except for some WhatsApp messages (and only sometimes); making standard calls worked, though.

Cheers,
Michele.

Hi pviral, GPS units are available from many retailers in SA and most of the popular makes are available. They pretty much all come with Southern African, not only South African, maps installed. If you are hiring a car, most of the car hire companies offer GPS units on rental. Reselling a unit might be a bit of a problem if you are pressed for time. All the good retailers would gaurantee the products they sell and you should have no problems getting a replacement for a faulty unit. Keep your documentation always. If you are flying in, all the cell service providers have booths at the airport and you will be able to get whatever you need from them. Enjoy your visit.

I use a Vodacom pay as you go SIM card for my Blackberry. The data (unlimited) add on costs me R59 for 30 days.

Best to ask at the booths at the airport when you arrive. I use Vodacom but the other 2, MTN and Cell C are, I believe pretty good as well.

Hallo dellac,
I bought a Sim Card with: http://www.b4igo.travel/

You can get it at Jo´burg or Cape Town airport. I did it in September and it was absolutly no problem.

Hope it helps :)

When my daughter and son-in-law arrive from UK, they go straight to one of the cell phone shops right at the arrivals hall at ORT. They get a SA SIM card which expires on the date their return trip is printed on their air ticket. They do not have to do the full RICA thing like SA residents - only show passport and air ticket.

Don't wait until you are away from the airport - shops are not so au fait with the rules for travellers! Do it while you are still at the airport.

Hello,

I am coming end of Feb, and I am looking for buying a sim card on B4igo.
During my stay I'll have to call in France and I am not sure if the pre loaded cards will allow me to call in France or if I have to buy the "international calling plus" pack as well.
If anybody can help me!
The great feeling to come back home every time I am in South Africa

I don't know what B4igo is, but I'd think that the easiest thing for you to do is to buy a pay as you go SIM card from Vodacom once you arrive in SA. You can do this easily at the OR Tambo airport and Vodacom has very good reception in most camps in KNP. You'll have no problem with a Vodacom SIM card to make an international call, the cost is just deducted from you overall air time. And I think that you can also easily buy a Vodacom top-up voucher in the KNP shops HTH

Have a great trip!
