A tip for saving some money using Vodacom and the b4itravel website ...

I have an iPhone 6 Plus phone here in the States. Initially, I was going to go to B4iTravel.com website to buy a SIM card plus a voice and data package. They email you the telephone number two weeks before arriving in the country.

Instead, I just paid the R99 for the SIM card only. (yeah, I know - tourist price!!)

I also downloaded and installed the myVodacom app on the iPhone.

Once your telephone number is emailed to you for the SIM two weeks before, you can use the app to buy your data and voice MUCH CHEAPER than the B4iTravel website or at the Vodacom airport. ie: Non-tourist ripoff prices.

Then all you need to do is pick up the SIM at the airport and you have all the features you want at a lower price...

Hi Lawrence,

That "b4i.travel" looks like a great idea, thanks for the post, when you walk into Vodacom to pick up your card do you have to wait in the lineup (if there is one) or do they have a pickup counter in the Johannesburg airport? We have a very short time between our arrival and departure and last year we had to wait 45 minutes to get our card from MTN.

Thanks for the feedback PNF and arks.

Letaba:-
Vodacom - 3G, working well, speed good enough for me to post pics and read the forums. Phone calls are fine.
MTN - 2G, weak signal

ThisIsLawrence and Shutterbug, I used this service last year in July. Pickup was quick and easy. I collected my sim card from the store which was located in the international arrivals terminal at OR Tambo. ( turn right after exiting customs through the glass doors and the store is opposite the coffee shop in the terminal). I guess that you may have to wait a bit if it is super busy, but you will not have the issue of having to do all the paperwork.

I assume the process and location of the store has not changed.

For anyone who is using the CellC network in Kruger - this seems to piggy-back on Vodacom so there is normally a good to reasonable 3G signal in the camps. BUT if Vodacom has a problem - then CellC is dropped first :(

Are there any internet terminals to hire in the larger rest camps now? Or any possibility of wifi at Skukuza or Satara if I bring a laptop?
For half a century I looked for an excuse to visit Africa and finally said to my son "Let's just go." Never regretted it, and about to return for my third trip to Kruger.

Rhonda, I will need to check if the Internet Cafe at Skukuza is operating again. Best tho is to hire a dongle and data card when you arrive at the airport. There is no wifi and you need to connect to the 3G, or (mostly) slower, which is available in most camps. But do not rely on it, I was in Satara recently for a few days and the data signal was down.

I already have a prepaid dongle I use for 3G when traveling in Australia. Could it work in South Africa if I buy a local sim card for it?

Rhonda, I am not qualified to reply on that - my first reply will be yes. But that is because I assume Australia and SA use the same type of mobile networks, and type of sims. For eg, USA has a different network.

Illustrating my point

If you can establish that a local sim will work in your dongle, then that is definitely the best route to take

Rhonda, as far as I know, the 3G dongles are usually locked for their specific network provider.

I could not use SA dongle in Australia so presume the same applies in reverse. Certainly the one I bought in Australia does not work here as it tries to take me to that network.

Just to confuse the issue, my daughter used an SA dongle with an Oz sim card in Perth three weeks ago (data only), and it worked 100% (email, Whatsapp, browser). It wasn't supplied by one of the SA networks, though, so perhaps that's why ... Just bring the Oz dongle, and get MTN/Vodacom/Cell C at the airport to set it up for you. If it works, great; if not, hire / buy an SA dongle

There used to be an Internet Café at Skukuza, 'cos some friends of ours accessed their email from there (not for free!) But I don't remember seeing it last time we were there ...

Australia and SA us the GSM system, so as long as the dongle you have is unlocked, you should be able to use it with a SA sim card. Check with your network provider.
