There is a good chance that cheetahs will eventually become extinct despite the most protracted conservation efforts. The reason for this is because almost all cheetahs alive in the world today share 99% of their genes with each other. Fact or Myth?

True or False: if you spin a mint coin on a smooth and horizontal surface, the probability of it landing either heads or tails is 50%?

Myth..... they are still wide spread so 99% is a bit high

I would say true - but there is probably a reason why it is false???

Delene and Philip, on a balance of probability without me having given the answer, I'd say that you could be have a 50% chance of being right or a 50% chance of being wrong.

I want to hear the opinions of others too; and please don't just guess - give me some reasons why you think what you do ...

False.

I believe it is about impossible to provide a theoretical probability. For one there are too many variables to consider. One would have to test a certain coin empirically just to find out if the chances of heads/tails are truly 50/50, because each coin is weighted differently and has different wear patterns and lastly each person flips a coin differently.

Fact

Because of the lost of habitat but also over a period of time the extreme reduction in their numbers have led to the result they faces genetically inbreeding and the lack of genetic diversity.

Myth.

Recent genetical studies have shown that Cheetah are actually much more genetically diverse than previously thought. It seems there are a number of different genetical strains.

Extinction will most probably be due to the normal cause - habitat loss and destruction due to human encroachment.

Nice answer, Markus, but let me ask: remembering that it is a mint coin that is being spun on a smooth table, are you saying that it will NOT be a 50% chance of falling either heads or tails, or are you saying it could be so, depending on the coin?

What I trying to say is that you are going to do a hell lot of flipping to determine the percentage whether its going to fall on heads or tail. I also think each coin differs from another which might have a impact on the outcome.

The only thing I'm 100% sure about is that it will fall on heads or tails!

Delene and Philip, thanks for participating. However, I'm handing the baton to Markus, mainly because he has thought carefully about the problem and actually come close to the answer. Because of the unequal weighting on a coin's two faces, a spinning coin will indeed favour one over the other. And, Marcus, your last statement is NOT 100% true, because every few thousand spins, the coin will actually stop on its side!

Take it away, Markus ...
