Nice Q, Phokojwe.

Although technically breathing isn't the correct word to use - insects don't have lungs, nor do they transport oxygen through their circulatory systems - they do perform an oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange mechanism via tubes and spiracles. Spiracles are breathing holes located along the sides of the bodies of insects, which are connected to trachea (air tubes). The insect can open or close the spiracles by contracting muscles along its side, which in turn allows the simple two-way diffusion of air, and thereby oxygen and carbon dioxide through the insect's cells. Because the insect cannot control the rate of diffusion of gases using this method, this proves to be the prime factor that limits its size.

Almost all animals cease to move when their heads are severed from their bodies. However, some insects, like ants, can still sting and run around after their heads are removed. How is this possible?

Because their nerves kept on working? Maybe their sensors aren't located in their head/brain like ours?

"After you cut a insects head off, very often their necks would seal off just by clotting. They do not have blood pressure the way people do. There's no uncontrolled bleeding. Insects have clumps of ganglia—nerve tissue agglomerations—distributed within each body segment capable of performing the basic nervous functions responsible for reflexes. So without the brain, the body can still function in terms of very simple reactions. They could stand, react to touch and move."

Philip

In addition, insects breathe through spiracles located along the sides of their bodies and the brains do not control this breathing and blood does not carry oxygen throughout the body. Rather, the spiracles pipe air directly to tissues through a set of tubes called tracheae. :hmz:

Heksie, yes, that is true, but I wanted to know why it is so.
Phokojwe, thanks for the extra info.
Philip, spot on. It is the "extra brains" contained in nerve bundles known as ganglia that can allow the insect to continue functioning without its main head-based brain; albeit for a limited time period.

Over to you, Philip ...
