Malelane Camp Site

Unread post by Reg Botha » Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:48 pm

Hi, planning to go to Malelane Camp site during the 2nd week of September. Have never stayed at this site. Are the camp sites grassed and do they have electric points? I have a Skipper Tent trailer which is only 220 volt. Thank you.

And a quick reply......yes there are power sockets. You might want to bring a long extension though as some sites are a distance from the plugs, and do not forget to bring the blue camping adaptor.

Many sites do have some grass, but by September the winter will have reduced that to a minimum. It could be quite dusty.

Malelane camp has no shop, restaurant, or petrol station, so make sure you get supplies in Malelane town before you come in, or go to Berg-in-Dal just down the road (12km).

And finally, you check in at Malelane gate as there is no office at the camp itself.

After a 4:30 a.m start, we were asleep in Malelane by 8:30p.m on Thursday night.
Left camp for a productive drive towards Afsaal at 4:30 a.m. on Friday morning but not much decent reception of Internet along the way.
Went back to camp to pack up reluctantly, as no time left to do more than an admiring wander around the trees and move to Lower Sabie on our trek to the North. ( an area of the park we usually can't reach on our shortish trips )
It was our 1st visit there but won't be our last!
We watched a group green backed wood hoopoes flitting around the trees and sitting on a thatched roof with wings outspread.
Admired the spread out camping setup near the entrance!
Thanks for the advice re route as I had posted a hurried query along the way somewhere!

You can also book in at BnD, but it is better to do so at Malelane gate.

If people are not selfish there is actually space for all sites to be along the fence. The area is almost twice the size of the Croc Bridge camping area.

Goggo

One other point, are there enough braai facilities for everyone or does this also depend on other campers using 1 braai or 2?

The reason why I am posting these questions are for other users as well, if I PM you direct it wouldn't help.

Many thanks for your help.

There are sufficient braai stands for each site to have one. If folk are being greedy/selfish then ask them, or a staff member, to give you one. They are 'mobile' and can be moved around the area so you may find one standing looking lonely in a corner or between occupied sites. The only ones that cannot be moved around are the 5 allocated to the bungalows of course.

There are also now 2 gas cookers (with oven!) as well as the usual 2 plate electric hob.

Stayed at the camp on the 25th to the 26th April 2016 ; part of the fence was smashed down by a falling tree caused by an elephant ; found ellie dung inside the camp ; but we were duly informed of the condition of the fence by the lady in charge ; any animal could have come in that night ; other than that the toilets were working and functional.

The fence has been repaired and upgraded to an electric fence now.
