Has anyone been on the Voortrekker Road in the last couple of weeks? If you have, would love to hear the condition and if it is very corrugated? Hoping to use it next week to get down to Berg en Dal to avoid being caught up in the stop/goes in the gorge

Hi SG

We drove it a few days ago and thought it was fine, but not sure what it was like previously.

Certainly there were corrugated sections but not too serious. Did not have any problems.

We drove this road 3 weeks ago. Road conditions not too bad. We didn't even see an impala on this road. Maybe the animals heard i'm going to travel this road and looked for shelter... :hmz:

Unread post by glordon » Thu May 21, 2015 8:55 pm

Hi All,
My SO and I are going to Kruger next week , staying at P/kop.
Can anyone tell us whether the road H2-2 down to Afsaal is fully usable?
Many Thanks

Hi,

It is. There's a little detour, you drive next to the roadworks. No problems at all though but its bit shaky...

I hope this helps.

Can you let us know if its still so badly corrugated. Travelled on it last year and was horrendous to say the least.

Hello Fee,
We did take the H2-2 gravel road all the way to Afsaal from Pretoriuskop and you are correct the road is very bumpy with lots of corrugation stretches ( I almost thought I was back in the Kgalagadi!!)
also quite a lot of water "dongas" especially on the downslope of the corners so you need to proceed on the upside ie against the direction you are going.
Otherwise the scenery was pleasant although we did not see too much game on this stretch.
Hope this helps
Enjoy your trip when you go.

Glordon-

Thanks for the feedback. In November we experienced horrendous corrugation on that road and seriously thought my car would not last the distance. It was an awful experience.
Many visitors on various face book sites feel the same and won't be travelling that road in a hurry.

The Voortrekker Road is one of my favourite roads in the Southern section of Kruger . Not remembered for great sightings as in the ten or so times I have driven this road I can only recall having seen Lion and Sable . I just love the way it flows but I see from recent posts , that I may have to change my opinion as it appears to be heavily corrugated . I am planning a glorious 28 days in Kruger , towards the end of 2017 and my first 5 days will be at Pretoriaskop . This will be followed by a couple of days at Letaba before a week in Shingwedzi . I will be spending this duration up North to try and locate one mammal . The only large mammal in Kruger , I have yet to see ----- Eland . My question however is to do with the Voortrekker Road . One website on the internet to do with mammal numbers in Kruger , states that there is a small number of Eland between Berg-n-Daal and Pretoriaskop , and I wonder if anyone has seen any of these along the H2-2 .

Rottweiller, if you have a read through the topic on Eland you will see that there have been sightings of Eland in the P/kop area but not for some time.

It is my understanding that most of the rarer antelope (other than Sable) decided a while ago, that for them, North is best!!
