Malalane Private Camp

Unread post by ilonaharris » Thu May 18, 2017 1:52 pm

Good morning, I recently had the pleasure of caravanning at Malalane Private Camp. Can someone please explain how does a camp become private, is it not managed by San parks? How do I become a member of a "private camp" and what this entails?

Thank you in anticipation!

Malelane Camp (satellite camp of Berg en Dal) is not a "private" camp. It is a SANParks camp. I have seen on a website that is not the official SANParks website, that it is referred to as a "private" camp - I think they are confused!

Malelane Camp is booked, as all other camps, via the SANParks booking system - online, e-mail, phone call or personal visit to a SANParks booking office.

It is a nice small camp with camping and only 5 chalets.

Thanks, what I cannot understand then is why the stone beacon on the road reads "Private Camp"?

At one point it became a private camp which could only be booked as a whole, and that is where the 'Private' part of the name came in. These days it remains private only in that it is only open to guests actually staying there,.....but this is in line with the general security policy throughout KNP that day visitors/guests from other camps are not allowed amongst the bungalows and camping area. Only the main tourist camps have parking areas and facilities for guests coming for the day or from other camps, so they are the only camps open to everyone.

Have you read the entrance permit? Do you KNOW the Conditions of Entry?

Thanks GEJ - that explains the confusion!

Yes, the camp is very small and does not have a restaurant, shop, fuel station or day visitor area. From that point of view, it is (like the Bushveld Camps) rather "private".

Thank you for all the information re Malalane. I so enjoyed being there as I tend to be "allergic" to crowds.

Looks like the campsite might be come private soon. Still waiting for the response from SANParks on why 10 sites are booked out continuously for 6 months from Nov - April while the available was always high in the past even up to 31 October 2017.

The camp is very small and only 5 sites left to the public. Needless to say those sites are not along the fence if the same will happen as in Pretoriuskop. :hmz:
Next trip: Kgalagadi in July 2017

Last trip: Tsitsikamma NP, Addo Elephant NP and Mountain Zebra NP

I'm not a camper but when the 'Malane private camp guests'
or Glampers, get in without any tents etc of their own,
and probably little experience of KNP
(probably going to complain about lack of Wifi, swimming facilities, shop etc)...
then bring KNP into disrepute.

So are the 'drives' a SanParks drive, or run by the operators ? Given that some are sunset drives equivalents then this has to be compliciant from SanParks :?

I am really concerned that SanParks have not responded in any way over several past posts, as to why these, and any other, blanket bookings have been permitted and not cancelled.

Let's mites and the general public request that SanParks reject these and similar block bookings ???

If not then we can only assume collusion... :hmz: :hmz: :hmz: :hmz:

I think this absolutely really nice camp would lose its charm.

Unfortuntaly this lovely quiet camp is no longer on my KNP bucket list..    (sorry EJ)

If this block-booking that constitutes 2/3 of the available camping at Malelane is indeed true, does that mean that pre-erected permanent tents occupy those areas? If not, then is it not still first-come-first-served as to choice of location? However, if the 'worst' has indeed happened, then one of my favourite camps will have been sold-out for, what else but, monetary considerations. Would love to hear from someone who knows the why and wherefore of these assertions, but suspect we may only find out when it is mostly too late??

Hi

I have booked to camp at Malelane with my tent in July. Do you think I will still get near the fence? I have 55 metres of extension cable.

Thanks

There is a bit of a controversy at the Malelane camp at the moment and all the fence view sites may be booked out Sooooo I would just keep my eyes peeled to see what is happening.
