Dirty Orpen waterhole

Unread post by SGM » Thu Dec 10, 2015 12:52 pm

Who is responsible for cleaning it? I was so happy to see the cam back, but no animal will come there. Surely it is possible to clean it and not wait for rain?

That is hippo dung in the water, and there is no point in cleaning it until the hippos move off ... and the only way, imo, to get the hippos to move off will be for the water to dry up.

So, there is a good reason it is not 'cleaned'. :D

SGM, yes, indeed many do watch the webcams; but also fortunately for us who love Kruger, the conservation managers in the park will do what is best for the animals and the park first. We can see a tiny window into the area via the cam, we have no idea where else there is water, if it is clean etc - we are not in a position to judge. And my comment earlier was based on info I have from senior conservation officials regarding this waterhole at present.

The hippos are still very much resident in the waterhole, so totally understandable why the water is looking as it is.

Cleaning of Orpen waterhole - pics/report

Unread post by raychi » Tue Dec 15, 2015 10:13 am

Hi all

I have spoken to the camp manager at Orpen with regard to cleaning the waterhole. The waterhole was cleaned on the 21st of November 2015 when the cam was still down. 10 min after cleaning the waterhole, Hippos came in and messed up the waterhole. They are still working on a plan of fixing the waterhole and how best they could prevent hippos from messing up the waterhole.

Attached are pictures the guys cleaning and after.
