Intervals between Webcam pictures

Unread post by Arnfried » Fri Sep 08, 2017 6:11 pm

It is so frustrating watching the webcams.
The Nossob pictures are updated between 1 minute and 1.5 minutes
The Orpan pictures are updated between 15 seconds (very rarely) but usually 1 minute and 1.5 minutes
The Addo pictures are updated between 45 seconds and 1.25 minutes
The Satara pictures are updated between 45 seconds and 2 minutes

Yet the website says the pictures are updated every 15 seconds. This is dishonest and deceptive information.

When an animal arrives at the waterhole, during it's 5 minute stay, one may see only one picture (or part of the animal) at a poor angle. And because the webcam's angles move, by the time the webcam is back on the animal it has turned around and is walking away.

Surely the webcams can be programmed so that photos are taken every 10 - 15 seconds so that one can enjoy the animals that are at the water holes and not have to look at empty parts of the waterhole for 2-3 minutes while a pride of lions are drinking just metres away.

I have not recently checked the updates and am sorry about your frustration, Arnfried.
I do know that info would never intentionally be dishonest and deceptive.
Will alert SANParks PR and our Web Content Officer about this.

For me it is consistently 45 seconds, then 15 seconds, 45, 15 etc.
On all cams on 2 different devices.

Thank you, Karin :gflower:
I will forward your post too.

I am sure that Danie must be aware of this though :D
I know that he and the team are constantly watching and checking and am sure that he is also aware of how very grateful we are for the privilege of being able to have a window on nature :gflower:

Believe me, we also enjoy watching the webcams very much when we have a chance!

The website says:

These are photo shots taken once every 15 seconds. It may happen that the update is disrupted due to power failure (hey, this camera is in the African wilderness after all), or bad weather conditions.

I do not see a promise of updates every 15 seconds?

The page refreshes at 15 second intervals. It does not mean there is a new image at the time of refresh. There are 4 cams the script needs to get images from. Images need to be downloaded, processed and saved to the webfolder. Speed of download also affects the process. It can take 30 - 60 seconds for all images to be updated.

That is a simple summary of the process. It is more complicated obviously. But there certainly is no dishonest and deceptive information being given.
