Need help with this one taken at Augrabies Falls Nat. Park this past August.

Its that massive bill that's throwing me--not right for a sparrow, not right for a lark (and body shape wrong for a lark too..) Bill seems too thick for a chat also... Have looked through two field guides page by page and not found it! Help!

I'm sure its something quite common and ordinary that I am not considering :?

Hi BB,

Have a look at the Western form of Sabota Lark, sometimes called Bradfield's Lark.

Barcud, I do believe that's it! What threw me was not only the thick bill but also the Sabota's I've seen (and I have other photos of Sabota's) have much lighter colored and pointier bills. I was starting to think this was some sort of mutant

Thanks a million!

I think most likely Sabota Lark, but the back is not boldly mark which worries me, otherwise Stark's Lark is a second option. Good photo.
Go look at some of my photos (mostly birds) @ http://www.outdoorphoto.co.za/forum/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=20417

Expect the unexpected...
