As far as I know, a great many of the fish eating birds and a few other species adopt this method of whacking their prey a good many times before finally eating it. :D

I watched these guys fishing for quite a while on my previous visit to Kruger. It was at a seasonal pool close to the Letabariver.

It seems to me they dive into the water and do not fly away straight away when they surface. It seems to me they fall back into the water and then come up again and fly off. I assume the second bounce is to gain momentum to be able to get out of the water. This doesn’t happen every time. Sometimes they fly off after the first bounce out of the water.

The pics I got are not great. It’s only an aim and shoot camera, and it was overcast, and I had to crop them.

beautiful photos everyone :D the pied kingfisher really is a photogenic bird.
@Skopsie: lovely photos of the bird diving :clap:

In April we saw these little guys at Panic bird hide. there were 3 of them and they were just so beautiful
