Dove, Lemon

Unread post by Nyala » Wed Feb 04, 2009 11:10 am

I need confirmation on the following Dove, please
Seen at Nature's Valley in July.
My reasoning in ID-ing is as follows, please correct me where I am wrong.
I ruled out the doves not seen in that area. That leaves me with:
1. Lemon (Cinnamon) Dove
2. Red-Eye Dove
3. Cape Turtle Dove
4. Laughing Dove
5. Emerald Spotted Dove
6. Tambourine Dove
7. Namaqua Dove.

The red eye-ring rules out numbers 3,4,5,6 & 7.
The lack of half-collar rules out adult Red-Eye Dove, but it could be a Juvenile. The underparts are too light though.

That leaves me with Lemon (Cinnamon) Dove.
Is that correct? This dove has also been ringed.

Re: Identification Help - General Birds

Absolutely! And an awesome bird to photograph so nicely. These birds are usually very secretive and keep to the dense undergrowth in forests. You rarely get to see them properly before they scuffle away again so getting to see one perched on your deck railing and even photographing it is pretty cool.

Your ID process is good. Just a comment or two perhaps. While juvenile Red-eyed Dove do indeed lack the half collar, they wouldn't show the red eye-ring either. As you correctly noted, the darker (cinnamon) underparts also points strongly away from juvenile Red-eyed Dove.
