Anyhow, back to South African birding: this raptor was seen on the Zaagkuildrift Road, this weekend. I am fairly sure as to its ID and would like to hear what others have to say.

Your Accipiter can only be one bird, Ovambo Sparrowhawk. The fleshy cere is typical of OS and the white eyebrow appears on all juveniles and some adults.

Thanks, I reckon Ovambo as well (sub adult, not quite the classic grey of the adult), I saw the bird fly and there was no evidence of white on the rump. Barring up to the throat also moved me away from possible confusion with Gabar. As you say, the white eyebrow is also a diagnostic feature of this species.

I just needed another person's input.
Cheers

Hi again Niall ,

I agree on the ovambo sparrowhawk , and that it probably is a subadult bird – I think you can actually see it moulting on the first photo . My only concern is that this bird seems to have an unbarred throat….?

Saw this guy today at Stilfontein, North West. Is it an Ovambo Sparrowhawk, juvenile, pale form? :hmz:

I've seen my first Ovambo sparrowhawk this past Sunday    ; a young one hunting just behind our house in the veld... Heard the "klieeu klieeu klieeu" described above several times earlier in the season (it's parents possibly?), but had no idea that it was an Ovambo sparrowhawk doing the calling :D

I was pleasantly entertained this weekend by two Ovambo Sparrowhawks.
