I actually saw these gulls along the Rhine in Cologne, Germany, in February 2014, but I believe that they also occur in SA? Are they perhaps nonbreeding greyheaded gulls?

As far as I know, GHGs do not appear in Europe. This must be something different. Unfortunately your pix do not show the detail required for me to pursue an ID in my European references.

Thanks, Johan, 'twas worth a try! They were my first birdie pix with what was my then very new camera last February and they were quite far away, too, more than halfway across the Rhine from the quay where I was enjoying the river traffic.

I think of Black-headed Gull (Mouette rieuse), we have a lot around :hmz:

Yip I agree - Non-breeding Black-headed Gull :thumbs_up:

Was in the UK recently and there are 1000's around :D
