Now on this trip near Orpen I came across this eagle feeding in the road. It took off and as I am in the process of learning to use a DSLR again after a break of nearly 30 years please forgive shakiness. Ordinarily I would say Tawny, but those very long thin legging say Lesser Spotted Eagle. Or are the legging so thin because it is in flight. I have never before seen a Lesser Spotted. Can one of the boffins please help. Please note that I never simply ask for an ID. I always try my best to do it myself as this is half the fun!

From the 2nd photo I would say Tawny

Hi Gary

I agree with Karin on the Tawny Eagle ID.

With your first photo. It is a Goshawk, but which one? :)

This is a good photo to show the difference between the two that can be confused IE Dark Chanting Goshawk and Gabar Goshawk.

There is a big size difference between the two, but on photos that is difficult to judge.

So, to demonstrate a quick way to separate the two species in the field, here is a photo of a Gabar Goshawk:

Notice the pale, white rump.

Here is your photo:

Notice the rump is barred all the way down.

Anyway, thought I would share that little info with everybody. It is a quick way to ID these guys in the field if you are not too familiar with their size differences.

Hi all,

I saw this one close to Skukuza last month.
I am not sure quite sure of the ID though : I have to go with a male African Goshawk because of the yellow eyes and legs and medium size and grey upperparts. Also I can't see 2 white spots on the tail as on a little sparrowhawk.
But still I have a slight doubt so if anyone can confirm
thanks

I would agree with the African Goshawk because of the greenish-grey cere elpaco, but rather wait for one of the experts to ID this raptor for you!

Saw this bird beginning of may around Pafuri near Limpopo
Seems to be a juvenile .
We saw this guy only from the back and could not check the throat.
Could it be a Lizard buzzard ?
Thanks for your help
