Not a great pic charbel, but my first instinct is a dark chanting goshawk.

Dear Bush Baptist,
Yes, the pic was not good. Cropped from a far away photo. Thanks for the tentative ID.
Any other opinions on this?

Cheers
Charbel

Do you agree that this is a Juv Gabar Goshawk seen in Kruger in Feb?
I am always a bit confused between that and a Dark Chanting Goshawk?

Hi Elsa, yes Dark Chanting Goshawk. The GISS of this bird is very much different from that of the Gabar and the Gabar is also much smaller.

Identification Help - Raptors

Hi Gary

With your first photo. It is a Goshawk, but which one? :)

This is a good photo to show the difference between the two that can be confused IE Dark Chanting Goshawk and Gabar Goshawk.

There is a big size difference between the two, but on photos that is difficult to judge.

So, to demonstrate a quick way to separate the two species in the field, here is a photo of a Gabar Goshawk:

Image

Notice the pale, white rump.

Here is your photo:

Notice the rump is barred all the way down.

Anyway, thought I would share that little info with everybody. It is a quick way to ID these guys in the field if you are not too familiar with their size differences.

Identification Help - Raptors

Unread post by roaneric » Tue Aug 30, 2016 12:14 pm

Hi Everyone

I'm a newbie in birding and decided to make my first bird list. I went through all the bird pics I took the last 10 years and my list coming on nicely. I just have trouble ID some of the birds (either the pics are not that good or I can't seem to ID them correctly) so I need help please. Here is my raptor pics I have trouble with

I changed the lightning and zoomed in so you can see better on some of the photos

Bird 1 I thought maybe a Ovambo sparrowhawk or southern pale chanting goshawk? (Aug, Krugerpark)
