Waxbill, Orange-breasted

Unread post by Johan van Rensburg » Wed Apr 20, 2016 4:44 pm

This little jewel has prevented me from getting good images of it over the many years I have been birding. Although not a scarce bird, the orange-breasted waxbill Amandava subflava is wary of humans and quickly disappears into the thick vegetation it prefers as habitat when approached; some birding seasons may pass without me spotting a single one! So, when I ran into a small flock of these shy birds in good light, I decided to sit for a while with the hope that their sound byte may lure them closer for a few good photographs. At first they kept their distance, but eventually a female bird came to investigate, soon followed by the brightly coloured male.

GOTCHA!

The female is quite a bit duller than the male…
