Thanks for the update Albert! All the most difficult ones seem to be left to be found!

Unfortunately, we are still trying to find our picture of the Racket-tailed Roller! The light was so bad, very cloudy, which must have been the reason why I didn't see any other colour on the Lilac-breasted Roller than blue with a white head, and have nothing to add, despite a whopping 15 lifers on our birding day with the legendary Johan van Rensburg and Bush Baptist! It was lovely meeting you and SO! Looking forward to your report back on the Makuleke Mission!

Great Spotted Cuckoo

Makuleke Mission (28-31 October)

Bearded Scrub Robin
Red-faced Cisticola

Enjoying sundowners at my favourite table on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Lucia Ski-boat Club I thought I started hallucinating when tracking a flying bird through my binoculars, decisively heading south… It looked like a Eurasian Oystercatcher, but at 500m plus, and with the ID-call belonging to a somewhat rare migrant, I really didn’t believe my eyes. After the Rare Bird News confirmed on the following Tuesday that the Eurasian Oystercatcher wasn't a figment of my imagination, I headed back to the northern KZN coastal town on the Friday evening, planning to track it down early Saturday morning.

Saturday morning dawned and in spite of a light drizzle, I tackled the estuary tern roost first. No roost forced a hike along the beach to Mapelane where I found the tern roost holding three African Black Oystercatchers, but no Eurasian Oystercatcher. Ah, well… back to atlassing leisurely…

News filtered through at around lunchtime that the EO had been spotted at North Beach, which is about 5km north of the estuary. After unsuccessfully chasing up-and-down that part of the coastline, I decided to again check out the tern roost at the estuary where I ran into two young birders who had just returned from Mapelane where they found the visiting rarity in the company of the African Black Oystercatchers.

The weather had turned gloomy and the forecast was for late afternoon thundershowers. I headed south as fast as my legs could carry me with a strong northerly at my back pushing me along. At some of the firmer stretches I even broke into a trot!

And there it was!

Image

The bird was a bit skittish and I couldn’t get much closer than about 60m before it took off. Not the best of shots, but tick #688 was recorded!

I still think that is a fantastic photo given the conditions you describe, and a sighting that leaves me a little

Not so sure about that. I was sitting next to Joh when he had the 'dubious' sighting of the European Oystercatcher at the SL Ski boat Club. He said he saw one, and it was me who introduced the doubt. He said it couldn't have been anything else. So we continued with an excellent dinner.

I was a bit frustrated to say the least to read, from home safely in Cape Town, about the EO sighting AND sooty tern thrown in.

Together with those, the green twinspot, starred robin, rosy throated long claw, grey waxbill and a few others taking their leave on my debut visit to St Lucia, it seems that I have a lot of unfinished business there......

Buy what the heck, congrats to my mate Joh for grinding out another lifer

Finally managed to get in a birding trip in 2016 to Ndumo in KZN and Wakkerstroom :D Despite the weather being pretty bad (the rain was welcomed), still managed to add 10 new birds to my list so now sitting on 648

New species added were:

Crested Guineafowl (Ndumo)
Neergaard's Sunbird (Ndumo)
Eastern Nicator (Ndumo)
African Broadbill (Ndumo)
Rudd's Apalis (Ndumo)
Grey Penduline-Tit (Ndumo)
Grey Sunbird (Ndumo)
Pale-crowned Cisticola (Wakkerstroom)
Rudd's Lark (Wakkerstroom)
Botha's Lark (Wakkerstroom)

Maybe I can sneak in 2 more in 2016 to get to my 650 target :hmz:
Latest Lifers: African Broadbill, Pale-crowned Cisticola, Botha's Lark
