Marakele - 4x4 needed?

Unread post by ice » Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:40 am

We are contemplating a trip to Marakele which we have never visited before. However, a few of the reports I read so far seem to indicate that (large?) parts of the park are only accessible with a 4x4 - is that really so?

thanks

Hi ice.

Marakele isn't a park with many tourist roads. The park is divided into two parts, the western- and the eastern part. You will find general game in the western part and dangerous game in the eastern part.

As far as I am aware there is only one road where a 4x4 is required (a dead-end road). Except if you are planning on doing the two night eco 4x4 trail where a 4x4 will most definitely be required.

A high clearance vehicle for the general roads will always be preferable.

Have a look at a map of Marakele: http://www.sanparks.org/images/parks/ma ... sm-map.jpg

ice - if you want to go into the eastern part of the park, I would advise a high-clearance vehicle. The roads are not 4x4, but not really sedan-friendly and you would have a much better ride in a high-clearance vehicle. If you go in a sedan, just take it very carefully and slowly. The roads in the first, western, part of the park are pretty sedan-friendly.

Tlopi camp is still unfenced, as far as I know. When are you planning on going ice?

Hi,

a 4x4 is not needed, I read. A SUV will be OK. However, how are things when driving a camper? Are the roads at Marakele suitable for campers?
We're planning on going in February.

Hope anyone can help.

Kind regards,
Minca
