We have a booking to go camping at the end of Nov and Im curious to know the damage and what to expect of the burnt bush veld?
what was the extend of the fire?

Dear wayneman,

Although there was no media release about any fires at Marakele, I will send your query to SANParks PR for a reply  .

Dear wayneman ,

I did receive a reply from the Hospitality Service Manager at Marakele that states that they did indeed had a fire during September 2017, however there was no damage to the parks infrastructure or loss of animals etc. . He also said that there is no need to cancel your booking  .

Enjoy the trip and hope to see a trip report on the forums when you are back :D .

Regards,

We visited Marakele over the Heritage Day long weekend in September.

Yes, large sections of the area around Tlopi and the towers did burn, but it wasn't total devastation by any means and new growth was already sprouting at the time of our visit. Did not see a single injured animal nor carcass that could have been caused by the fire. If Marakele received any rain since there should be a beautiful green flush by now over most of the "Big 5" section of the Park.

I can honestly say that it was our best ever visit as far as sightings were concerned and the Mbidi Loop and the area around the Thutong EE Centre was especially rewarding. Had our first encounters with the Park's buffaloes and lions, had close-up views of at least 4 different herds of elephants, and just missed two cheetahs near Tlopi 15 minutes before gate closing time.

As far as I am concerned, there's really no reason to postpone or cancel your visit.
